Carroll James

June 18, 1935 ~ August 2, 2019 (age 84)

Obituary

Carroll Dennis James, better known by many as "Smiley" to family
and friends, transitioned from labor to reward on Friday, August 2,
2019. He was born to the late Margaret Franklin and Emit Irvin in
Hopewell, VA on June 18, 1935.

Carroll completed his education in the Virginia Public School System.
During his young adult years he relocated to Baltimore, MD and was
employed with a moving company. Afterwards he joined the Steam-
ship Trade Association local Union 333. Through the union he was
employed at Domino Sugar where he retired after 30 plus years.

While employed with the moving company Carroll met Barbara M.
Brown. After a brief courtship they entered holy matrimony on August
5, 1967. They shared 52 amazing years of marriage.

Smiley enjoyed traveling down south to spend time with his family. He
also enjoyed spending time with his sister Adlener and many nieces
and nephews. He enjoyed fishing and spoiling his family especially his
children and grandchildren. There was never a car in the family that he
didn't personally test drive. While sitting on the step everyone looked
forward to stopping and having a conversation. He was always there to
lend a helping hand with a big smile on his face!

Carroll leaves to mourn his devoted wife Barbara, sister Adlener
Anderson, four daughters Cheryl Berkshire (William), Yvette Fowlkes
(Clarence), Carolynnette Scott (Norvin), Shannetta James, thirteen
grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild,
and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
