IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Addine E.
Barnes
March 17, 1915 – March 28, 2017
Born Addine Elizabeth, March 17, 1915 to John Rudolph Thompson and Blanche Jackson Thompson. Educated in the Catholic and Baltimore City Public School Systems, she graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. Employed by Western Electric Baltimore Works during WWII (a "Rosie the Riveter"), she later worked for W.T. Grant Co., Montgomery Ward & Co.; eventually retiring from The Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.
The youngest of six children. She never got to know her mother who passed into eternity when she was only four years old, and her father died when she was fifteen. All of her sisters passed away early in life.
Part of her formative years were spent under the care of her father's sister, Viola Thompson-Wise-affectionately referred to as "Aunt Vi" while her cousin Hilda served as the sister she never got to know.
Addine married Edward (Ed) William Carter, 1936; of that union gave birth to Carole and Edward, Jr (Eddie). After that marriage dissolved she spent time living with brothers Roland in Boston, and then Ruxton in New York.
In 1948 she married Kenneth (Kenny) Barnes; of that union gave birth to Kenneth Ruxton and Marlowe Christopher. After several years in New York, they returned to West Baltimore and eventually settled in the Walbrook Junction section in a neighborhood full of post-WWII Baby Boom kids. The Barnes household was a like Grand Central Station for the neighborhood-always teeming with activity.
"Miss Barnes", as the kids referred to her, had a soft heart; giving spirit, and kept her arms open wide to others' children, as well as her own. Raised in a family that stressed good manners and poise, she carried herself in a manner that personified Proverbs 3:17 - 18: "Her ways are pleasant ways and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed." Instilling those same values in others came naturally and was a hallmark of her personality. it was not at all unusual to see her herding a bunch of children onto public transit to attend a cultural event, visit museums, or other educational places. She knew how to challenge your thinking and encouraged all to follow their dreams.
A seasoned traveler who ventured to several European countries, as well as Bermuda and Canada with Carole and musician son-in-law Clyde Lucas. She was also a frequent travel companion of Marlowe and daughter-in-law Flemena, also traveling from coast- to-coast, visiting many states. Kenneth would travel several times a year from Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit her in Columbia, Maryland where she resided with Marlowe and Flemena.
Addine was a long -standing member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. In 1959 she and Kenny made the famous walk from the church's South Baltimore location to its present edifice on West North Avenue in Baltimore. Both were deeply involved in church activities, including the Adult Fellowship and Church Council. Addine was an active participant in the Cub and Boy Scouts, Little League Baseball as well as being a prominent voice in the John Wesley Sanctuary Singers.
After retiring, she immersed herself into activities at the Waxter Center for Senior Citizens, participating in arts and crafts and singing with a choral group that performed throughout the Baltimore-Washington region.
Preceding Addine in transitioning to rest eternal life -husband Kenneth (Kenny), one son Edward (Eddie), daughter-in-law, Lillie (Lil) and Son-in Law Clyde, as well as several nieces and nephews whom she raised like a mother. Remaining to mourn, yet celebrate her passing are 3 Children: Carole, Kenneth (Ken), Marlowe, loving Daughter- in-Law Flemena, 5 grandchildren- Edward, Kevin, Sean, Christopher, Marcus. Step- grandchildren: Karen Gladney and Roger, Flemena, and Nakia and 20 great-
grandchildren.
