Obituary

Alfreda Whitaker, daughter of the late Lawrence and Ruth Whitaker, was born on July 11, 1947 in Durham County, North Carolina. She heard the voice of her Lord and Savior calling her name into external rest on April 8, 2017.

Alfreda was affectionately known as Mommy by her only son Antonio Carter and she encouraged her family and friends to call her "Quality Woman". She was known as Freda to a lot of her friends and family. Alfreda was a woman of resources. She could take a little and make it into a lot. She was very stylish and could put an outfit together from head to toe, at the last minute.

Freda received her formal education in the Baltimore City Public Schools System. After graduating from High School, Alfreda went to work at Wyman Park as a Nursing Assistant. It was here that she realized she had a passion for children. Subsequently, Alfreda was employed by the Baltimore Department of Social Ser- vices in the Families and Children's Services Division. After very careful consider- ation, Alfreda decided to become a Foster Parent and she truly enjoyed her calling. She took in children of all ages. She was truly loved by all of those she cared for, especially her daughter Tiffany Owens. During this time, Alfreda decided to for- mally adopt her son, Tony and they became a family.

Freda will be fondly remembered for her enthusiasm of life. She was a source of great comfort to all who came in contact with her. She was a very devoted mother. She had a smile and a voice that could light up a room. Alfreda also had a unique way of drawing people to her. She was honest, straight forward and devoted to all of her family and friends.

Alfreda was later led by the Holy Spirit to unite with Greater Harvest Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Errol Gilliard. It was at Greater Harvest that Freda developed her love of singing. She joined several gospel choirs, most notably the John Beasley Interfaith Community Singers. Within the last couple of years, Alfreda joined The New Life Evangelical Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Milton E. Williams. She remained a faithful member here until her health began to fail.

Alfreda leaves to celebrate her memory: one son, Antonio Carter; a dedicated friend Sylvester Conner; four brothers, William Rogers of Baltimore, James (Jackie) Rogers, Frank Rogers, and Michael (Sara) Rogers all of Durham; four sisters, Cora Cooper, Elsie (James) Wilkerson of Oxford, Tanya (Steve) Perry, and Lorraine Whitaker of Raleigh; two uncles, Luther Snipes and Dennis (Daphne) Snipes; and a host of other relatives and friends.
