IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alillian Gertrude
Williamson
December 24, 1924 – October 14, 2016
ALILLIAN GERTRUDE WILLIAMSON (affectionately known as 'Bill'), the eldest child of seven (7) children was born in Wayne County, North Carolina to the late Daniel Larkin Williamson, Sr. and the late Emma Gertrude (Ford) Williamson (who died in 1932 at the age of29 years) and was mother offour (4) children. At her Mom's death, Alillian was only eight (8) years old. Alillian was a special Christmas Gift to the World, because she was born on December 24, 1924.
Alillian's siblings were: Mary L. (1926-2014), Samuel Sr. (now age 87), Morris L. (1930-2013), Daniel Jr. (1935-1996), Jean M. (1937-1989) and Jacquelyn D. (1938-2013); the last 3 children were born with her stepmother, Johnie (Kelly) Williamson. Alillian's parents were share-crop farmers.
Alillian began her education in North Carolina and she completed the 12th grade in 1943/44.
Her 1 SI career as a beautician began in 1944 and continued until she began her next career. She worked in many beauty shops in Goldsboro, NC.
In 1947, her precious daughter, Carolyn Devon was born.
In 1952, Alillian decided to better her working conditions and wages, so she left Carolyn in North Carolina with her parents and siblings and moved to Washington, DC and worked in her Aunt Ada's beauty shop as a beautician. In 1955, Alillian completed Nursing School, becoming a Practical Nurse (LPN) and worked in different hospitals, nursing homes and private homes (as a private duty nurse); this was her 2nd career.
Now, it was 1956 and Alillian attended a Bible Class with a new Adventist friend and met the late Paul & Esther Rolling (later becoming Carolyn's godparents). After intensive Bible study and her complete faith and trust in GOD's Holy Word, Alillian was baptized at the First Seventh-day Adventist Church, Washington, DC in 1957. This study prompted Alillian to return to NC and get her daughter and return to her new life in DC. Back in DC, she placed Carolyn in Adventist schools from: Washington Union Academy (now known as : Dupont Park Adventist School) through Columbia Union College (now known as : Washington Adventist University) in Takoma Park, MD. Establishing a solid relationship, Alillian and Carolyn moved into the Rolling's recently purchased home and a special close knit family developed with the Rollings assisting in the training and education of young nine-year old Carolyn.
While at First Church, Alillian held many positions such as the Cradle Roll & Kindergarden Teacher and Leader
(She loved teaching children about JESUS and HIS love), Deaconess and she sang 'alto' in the Sanctuary Choir. During this time, Alillian met another member of the Rolling Family Unit - Ellen Sakai, and this unit bonded together as a family and they loved to sing and serve GOD, which was their main aim. Alillian became a mother-in-law when her daughter, Carolyn Devon was joined in marriage to Marvin Johnny Thurman on September 11, 1988.
In 2000, Alillian moved her church membership to her daughter's Baltimore City Church, Cherry Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church and she served as the Health Leader and the 50+ Leader and also helped in the kitchen with Sabbath dinners.
After 2011, Alillian slowed down a bit and decided to only work as a helper in the Community Services Department including Food Distribution, which she deeply enjoyed.
After the death of her siblings, she weekly phoned her nieces and nephews to share with them her love, keeping in contact with them, giving them encouragement, advice and making sure that all was right in their world.
Alillian was a devoted member of the New Beginnings (formerly: Cherry Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church).
She believed in family and was a good old Southern cook, and her specialty was cooking those 'good old Adventist Burgers', and baking her 'delicious' pumpkin bread - and this she truly enjoyed. She loved to plant beautiful flower gardens and visit the sick and shut-in members of the Church. People were often surprised that she was 91 years old and her reply was: "To GOD be the glory - It is HIS blessings and favor upon my life."
