Allen Dawson, the son of the late William and Grace Dawson
was born September 19, 1928 in Berkley County, South Carolina.
He departed this life on May 22,2018.
He received his primary education in the Berkley County
South Carolina.
In
1957 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland.
He became a master upholsterer, to be followed by a career
as a U. S. Merchant Seaman, where he traveled the world and
was more then pleased to talk about the many countries that
he visited, with his favorite being what he called motherland,
Africa.
He was well known by many in Baltimore as Clean Boy for
his elaborated wardrobe and dress, where he was often
seen wearing tailored made suits from many of the different
countries he visited while sailing as a Merchant seaman.
He was also known as Big Rufus and as Geechee for his ability
to often and fluently spoke the unique language called Sea Island
Creole English, which was combined with the several languages
of his African ancestors. Which is also the primary language of
the people known as Gullah Geechees, who live in South Carolina's,
Charleston region and Sea Islands area. He was also a great pool
player, who many in Baltimore bolstered that he mastered the skill.
He also enjoyed cooking and often bragged about the many recipes
that he created.
Allen was a very wise man and able to quickly analyze worldly
issues and then take the time to speak about the issues and
educated anyone who
would take the time to listen and learn from his wisdom.
Leaving to celebrate his life is: one daughter, Teresa; one son,
Rufus; one daughter in-law, Roselie; seven grandchildren, Lisa,
Morris, Gary, Brittney, July, Ashlie, Aezel; three great grandchildren,
Ashley, Cindney, Kamya; two great great-grandsons, Jason and
Zander; one niece, Gwendolyn; three nephews, Guy, Accra, David;
a close friend and companion, Carmella and a host many other
family and friends.
Allen's parents and all of his siblings preceded him in death.
