Obituary

Anita Rudella Rhoades Cammon, was born June 18, 1928 to the late Rudolph H. Rhoades Sr. and Mamie Ball Rhoades in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the eldest of two children. She transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on May 22, 2006 after a brief illness. Educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools, Anita completed high school in the accelerated program at Frederick Douglass High School in August 1945. Anita immediately went on that fall to attend Morgan State College where she later earned her B.A. degree in English . A gifted artist and a talented seamstress, Anita once entertained the idea of moving to New York to become a fashion designer. However, upon completion of college, she chose to pursue what she felt her true calling; to become a teacher. In addition to her academic education, Anita received religious training at home and in Sharon Baptist Church in Baltimore City. Anita developed and maintained a deep personal relationship with God at and early age, and that relationship served as her source of strength throughout her life. As a young woman Anita enjoyed life with family and friends. She was a loving daughter and sister. She enjoyed assisting with the family catering business and would often accompany her parents and aunts; Thelma, Hilda and Pauline, on local jobs as well as travel with them to New York and Ocean City to work for the summer. Anita also enjoyed laughing and spending time with her friends. She cherished the friendships she was able to maintain for over sixty years with several of her high school classmatesd and childhood friends. Anita taught at serveral middle schools in Baltimore City such as Frederick Douglass Middle School School #181 and Booker T. Washington Middle School. She loved working with kids. She would often say that she was ''old fashioned'' because she required that her students grasped and retained the fundamentals of reading and comprehension. She exposed the children to classical literature, poetry and theatre, and challenged them to pursue academic excellence, creative thought and meaningful expression through the effective command of the English language. Anita modeled her commitment to education by pursuing her masters degree in English after several years of teaching. She received a masters degree in the early 1970's from Morgan State College. Soon after completing her graduate studies, Anita met and married Earl Lonesome and from that union came one son, Edmund A. Lonesome to whom she remained devoted her entire life. She later married Dr. Ulester Cammon of Pasadena, Marylandw who preceded her in death. After thirty-four years of service, Anita retired from her position as the English department head from Hampstead Hill Middle School, now Highlandtown Middle School, in 1983 and eagerly entered into a new phase in her life. An avid reader, she spent her early retirement doing some of the things she enjoyed the most such as traveling, sewing , playing cards, and mentoring youth and former students. In her later years she devoted her time taking care of loved ones, cooking signature meals for family members and keeping in touch by phone with friends such as Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Wooley and Khadijat Modiji. Anita was a strong and loving spirit who loved to smile and bring joy to others. We were blessed to have witnessed her life and we thank God for the many years of love and happiness shared with her. Anita Rhoades Cammon leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son Edmund A. Lonesome; loving brother Rudolph H. Rhoades Jr. and his wife Raella; adoring niece Lona Rhoades Ba; devoted nephew Rudolph H. Rhoades, III and his wife Colette; three great-nieces Raina E. Rhoades, Real A. Ba and Summer B. Rhoades; loving cousins Alease Hawkins, Yvonne Anderson and her husband William , Thomas May Jr. and family; devoted lifelong friends Emily L. Ford, Samuel ''Earl'' Jackson and Harry X. Peaker and a host of family and friends.
