Obituary

Annie D. Garrett was the second daughter of the late Minnie Barnes and was born in Wilson County, North Carolina. After attending public schools in the South, Annie moved with her older sister, Hattie Goggins, and her family to Baltimore, Maryland. As a young woman. Annie met the late Elmer Garrett and the late Michael William Garrett. Annie was a natural caregiver! She opened her home to All the neighborhood children. She nurtured many of them while her home became a safe-haven for all who crossed her doorstep. On any given Saturday, herliving room was full of young people, who had the pleasure of watching television for the first time. Her laughter was resonated throughout each house that she occuaied. Still on her last day on earth, some of the same children, who visited her room at Gilchrist Hospice Center, could feel the warth and love permeated throughout her room. The staff at Gilchrist oftern spoke about the peace that they felt when caring for her. Because of her love for young people, Annie sought employment in the Baltimore Public School System, where she became a shower attendant. Her penchant for the mentally impaired led her to join the staff as an assistant aide at The Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore. After her own children were married, annie relocated to New York for employment withe the State of New York. She worked at The Creedmor Psychiatric Center in Queens Village Neew SYork for more than 20 years. After retirement, she returned to Baltimore to enjoy her family and old acquaintances. She purchased a home in Baltimore County to be close to her children. Annie discovered Christ as a younth while in North Carolina. As a young woman, she joined Wayland Baptist Church located at Monroe and Franklin streets in baltimore, Maryland. She later joined Heritage United church of Christ, under the reverend Wendell Phillips, and remained active until her illness. Annie had an eclectic taste for the fine and creative arts. She was talented at pottery work, which she continuusly gave to her family and friends. She loved the craft sa much that she created a pottery studio in her basement. She always talked about getting that kiln- to possibly burn up the neighborhood! Oh, Annie Doris!!! Annie was also a collector of model cars, which included corvetts, Rolls Royces, and Bentleys. However, she will always be remembered with joy among friends and family as our "private dancer" who loved hand-dancing, ballroom dancing, and most of all, tap dancing. Our fair lady "dancer till the music stopped." She danced All night long! In 2004 her Alzheimer's disease coused her to stop living independtly and she decided to move with her daughter. As the disease became more challening, Annie needed extra care. She enjoyed being picked up each day to go to the Easter Seals Adult Day Care Center. As the disease progressed, Annie moved to the assisted living community. Prior to her final illness, she lived at Sunrise of Pikesville on Old Court Road. After an unexpected surgery, Annie was loving cared for at the gilhrist Hospice Center in Towson, Maryland. As Annie joins the clouds of witnesses--to include her son Michael and sister Hattie--she leaves to celebrate her life her loving daughter Vergenea "Dena" Wright; one daught-in-law gertrude "Liz" Garrett; one son-in-law Frank O. Wright, Jr.; four grandchildren, Frank O. Wright III Terry, Michael Garrett, Jr. Dionne, Danielle Wendy Minor Anthony, and Marc G. Wright; eleven great-grandchildren, to include her loving Nia Brown; one great-great grandson, one special niece, Addine Barnes; great nephew Kenneth Barnes; great nephew Marlowe Barnes Flemena; great niece Carole Lucas Clyde; one god-child, Sybil Johnson; one dear extended niece, Terry Stephens; and a host of nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends.
