Ardelia Carroll,affectionately known as "Dee", was born on April 24, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Upshur and SallieCarroll. She was the youngest of six children, Charles, Pauline Beatrice, Upshur, Jr., and John. Sheissurvived by her "big sister"Pauline.
Ardelia was educated in the Baltimore City Schools system, having attended Henry Highland Garnet Elementary School, BookerT. Washington Junior High School and Frederick Douglas Senior High School.
From early childhood, she was a long-time member of the Pennsylvania AvenueAMEZion Church. There she sang on the Junior Choir and was a Vacation Bible School teacher. In her young adult years, Ardelia joined Shiloh Christian Community Church in South Baltimore, under the leadership of Reverend George W. Baynard. There, Ardelia was a dedicated member of the Progressive Adult Circle, the Celestial Voices Choir as well as the Tuesday Seniors Ministry.
Ardelia married GeorgeGrant (deceased) in 1947. From that union, three children were born, Gloria, George "Sam" (who both preceded her in death) and Shelly. From her union with Thomas Prince, a daughter, Doriene was born. She later married the love of her life, Thomas H. Carroll of Anne Arundel County, who preceded her in death in 1966.
Ardelia worked for years at Naron Candy Company. She later went to work for theUSPostal Services as a Window Finance Clerk until a chronic back ailment forced her retirement. She was an active member of the National Alliance of Postal and Government Employees for many years. She also worked part time at Maryland National Bank(known now as Bank of America) asaTeller. Ardelia went on to serve as Experience Corp volunteer in the Baltimore City Public Schools, as well as a Foster Grandparent for the Maryland Department ofJuvenile Services. She was also a helpful neighbor and friend to those who needed her assistance.
Ardelia survived a close-knit circle of lifelong friends who became a part of our extended family. Among them, her dearest friend Susie Gorham, Ruth Johnson and Bernice Adams. With them, she developed a love for traveling.
Ardelia leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Shelly Savage and Doriene Walters; her sister, Pauline Yarbough; four grandchildren, Monica Colston (Eric), Thomas Savage (Erica), DavidWalters and Teedra Sumbry (Vincent); six great grandchildren, Antoinette, Mark, Eris, Eric Jr., Jabar, and Kyndal; and one great great grandchild, Linwood, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Aswell as a special son Calvin Brown and two godchildren, MichaelGorham and Lisa Rose.
