AUDREY JOHNSON DAVIS, the daughter of the late Lenora Holland Johnson and James Barton Johnson, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 12, 1923. She was educated in the public schools of Baltimore City and graduated in 1940 from Frederick Douglass High School and from Coppin Teachers College in 1944. She was awarded a Masters Degree in Education from New York University in 1950. She pursued graduate studies in Administration and Supervision at the University of Maryland, the University of Massachusetts and the Johns Hopkins University. Audrey's thirty-two year tenure with the Baltimore City Public Schools began in 1944 as an elementary classroom teacher. She served in a number of supervisory and administrative positions, including school principal and administrative assistant prior to her retirement in 1978. She joined Union Baptist Church in 1946. One of her greatest pleasures was singing with the senior choir, which she joined in 1948. She stayed with the senior choir for fifty years. She was also a long standing member and active participant with the Gertrude Neal Circle. On March 30, 1947, Audrey and Pierre Davis were joined in matrimony at Union Baptist Church and enjoyed a full and rewarding life before Pierre's death in April 1987. To this union was born one daughter, Kay Leslie, who survives her mother. Audrey was a devotee to leisure time activities and crafts. She enjoyed designing and stitching the many needlepoint projects that were a demonstration of her skill. She was an accomplished dressmaker and spent many hours fashioning her own wardrobe and that of her daughter. She was a member of several social groups. Among them were the Gayzels and a group of life time friends and Arts Unlimited, a group of creative artisans. She was initiated into the Alpha Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in 1944, and was active with the Women's Committee of the Arena Players. Audrey is survived by her daughter Kay Leslie, her sister Bettye J. Fitzgerald, her nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. Audrey entered her final rest on July 31, 2013.
