Belle Decatur Lewis was born October 16, 1916, in Gloucester County, VA, to Robert and Gerline Lewis. She was the oldest of their five children. Belle's mother passed away at an early age, and she was raised by her loving grandparents, Philip and Anna Lewis. Belle received her education in Gloucester County. Belle was affectionately known as "Ma Belle" or "Doe Doe". Anyone who crossed her path fell in love with her quiet, humble spirit. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she met a lifelong friend, Patty Robertson. It was said that they were so close, you never saw one without the other. She also met the love of her life, J esse Carrington. They were introduced by their pastor, Rev. Purcell Edwards, married September 30, 1961, and spent many happy years together, until the Lord called him home. She was one of the founding members of Evangelical Baptist Church, where she served as deaconess, usher, and choir member. She loved to sing the songs of Zion. Two of her favorites were Yes, Jesus Love Me and There's a Bright Side Somewhere. Even while she resided in the nursing home she always sang to her Savior. One of her joys was caring for children. But when they misbehaved and she had to tell their parents, she would always say, "Don't whip them." Belle was the proud mother of two children, Audrey Hunter and Bernard Lewis; and three grandchildren, Gregory, Tommy, and Brian. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Lewis; her son, Bernard Lewis; her son-in-law, Carroll Thomas Hunter Sr.; and her grandsons, Gregory Lewis and Brian Keith Hunter. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Audrey Hunter; grandson, Carroll Thomas (Tommy) Hunter jr; daughter-in-law, Sarah Lewis; Rev. Dr. Purcell Edwards; his wife, joyce Edwards; their children, Theresa (Irvin); Purcell III (Fern); andIada (Warren); and their grandchildren, Tiffany (Marlon); Brandon, Jeremy, Warren, jayla, Warnell, David, Kristen, Mariah, and Mackenzie.
