Benjamin Brodie Matthews peaceably departed this life on Friday, May 29, 2015 at the Glen Burnie Health and Rehabilitation Center. Brodie was the third child of Benjamin and Carrie Matthews. He was born February 23, 1914 in Snowden town, Maryland off of Queentown Road, in Severn, Maryland. Brodie was educated in the Anne Arundel County Public School System and later attended night school to receive his GED. Brodie was united in Holy Matrimony on October 12, 1940, to Hilda Dotson Matthews, who preceded him in death. They were blessed with three children, Janice, Delroy and Chesley. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Brodie was proud to have celebrated his 100th birthday at John Wesley, where he had been attending since his boyhood. He loved gardening, fishing, hunting, collecting scrap metal and maintaining his lawn. Family members 'went on fishing trips with him; they recall the many ghost stories that he enjoyed sharing. Brodie worked on various jobs to support his family during younger years. He worked on Tracys Farm, plowing the fields with a horse named "King". He also worked on Hawkins Turkey Farm, which was located behind the Glen Ridge Apartments across the street from John Wesley. He was employed by Maisel Brothers and General Refractories (better known as the Brickyard). He retired from Glen Haven Cemetery at 62 years of age in 1976. He lived in his house for 10 years after the passing of his wife. He also went on long distance tractor truck rides with Delroy for two years. At the age of 93, he began living with his daughter, Janice, for five years, and entered the House of Loving Care Assisted Living, at the age of 98, and was there until he entered the nursing home. Brodie leaves to rejoice in his life and memories, a devoted daughter, Janice (Matthews) Jones; two devoted sons, Delroy (Matthews) Saleem (Madinah) and Chesley Matthews (Diane); one sister-in-law, Dolores Matthews; ten grandchildren, Bevern, Steven, Ricardo, Dawn, Jennifer (Jesse), Joy (Richard) Daryl, Jill (Michael), Ameenah (Julius) and Khalil; nine great- grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, neph- ews, cousins and friends.
