Obituary

Bernice M. Baylor (nee Robinson), the first child of Casrell and Christine Robinson, was born on January 23, 1918 in Washington, D. C. She departed this life on July 5, 2013 at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital, Randallstown, Maryland after a brief illness. Bernice received her early education in Washington, D.C. and New York City. Later, when her mother moved to Baltimore, Bernice and her younger sister, Vivian continued their education until Bernice stopped attending school after the 9th grade to go to work. Shortly, thereafter she met and married Winchester Lorenzo Jones in 1935 and became a housewife. During theses early years Bernice enjoyed socializing and going out with her friends. Ten years later Bernice and "Winnie" had their first and only child, Vivian Esther Jones named after her sister, Vivian and her best friend, who was named Vivian, too. After the death of her husband Winnie, Bernice married Leonard Baylor, who died in 1979 and she remained close to the Baylor family for the remainder of her life. It was during her marriage to Winnie, who was the breadwinner and Bernice, who was the stay at-home mother to Vivian that Bernice decided to return to work. One of her first jobs was as a housekeeper with Mr. & Mrs. Charles Page, who lived on West Lake Ave. in Baltimore County. She worked for them for many years and was instrumental in some ways of raising their two children, Charles and Elizabeth. She developed a bond with both children, which continued throughout her life. Charlie visited Bernice each month and would bring her some gifts. With another of her employers, a Mrs. Stafford, she would stop what she was doing to sit and watch the soap operas with her daily. Even when Mrs. Stafford entered hospice care, Bernice would talk to her regularly on the telephone about their soap operas. Bernice began driving in her late thirties out of necessity. But she never enjoyed it. When she reached the time when she could depend on her niece, Geraldine Coleman or someone else to do it, she gave it up. Bernice was a member of the old Orchard Street Methodist Church and transferred and transferred to Mt. Zion Methodist Church when Reverend John J. Barnes was moved there in 1953. She maintained her membership therefor the remainder of her life serving as a Stewardess and on the Courtesy Committee. After her first and only grandchild, Samantha, was born, Bernice would bring her to church, when Samantha would visit her during her summer school breaks. Retired in 1986 Bernice enjoyed her years of retirement traveling with her friends at church and entertaining in her home. At her home she enjoyed cooking and would prepare delicious meals for them. About ten years ago Bernice fell and broke her elbow. Her daughter Vivian came down from New York and took Bernice back with her for recovery and rehabilitation. When Bernice returned home she was able to manage her household again. Subsequently, as she became less able to climb up and down her stairs, her younger sister, Vivian moved in with her. After her sister, Vivian died Bernice depended on other members of her family for her care, particularly her niece, Dawn Terrel. Two years ago her daughter Vivian moved back to Baltimore to be closer to her mother and to provide more care for her. Bernice looked forward to the meals prepare by her daughter. She knew that Vivian would prepare a different menu each day for her because Bernice did not like the same thing two days in a row. Recently, when Bernice began to turn her meals away, Vivian suspected that she was not well. After visits at her home by the doctor and the visiting nurse she was admitted to the hospital, where she passed. She leaves to mourn: her daughter, Vivian J. Storey; one granddaughter, Samantha Rivera; a special niece, Geraldine Coleman; her grand niece and caregiver, Dawn Terrel and other relatives and friends.
