Bessie Ray Wright was born on August 14, 1941, in North Carolina to the late Lillie Mae Arrington and Hardin Lewis. She was raised with the guidance of her late stepfather, William Taylor.
She was one of five children and was preceded in death by her siblings Rosa Lee Daniels, William "Tim" Taylor, and Corrine Leake. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Sarah Lee Pitt, as well as her step-sister, Ida Brooks (Henry Brooks) and her step-brother, David Taylor (Geralyn Taylor).
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Pittman and Luella Wright; her special aunt, Gracie Davis; and a host of loving nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
At an early age, Bessie was united in marriage to Hilliard "Dreacher” Wright, who preceded her in death. From their union came four children: Larry Wright (Sheila Wright); Linda Carberry; Pamela Cherry (Frank Cherry Ill); and Hillard Thomas “Tommy” Wright, who also preceded her in death.
Bessie also lovingly embraced her stepchildren: Virginia Younger (Rob Younger); Barbara Wright; Carolyn Rook, who preceded her in death; Craig Hilliard Williams (Hope Williams); and Jennifer Dickens.
Later in life, Bessie found companionship and joy with Willie Demory. Together they shared vacations, laughter, and countless cherished moments that brightened her later years. Willie, too, preceded her in death.
After a life well lived, Bessie departed this life on March 2, 2026, at the age of 84. She was known for her kind heart, generosity, and warm, welcoming spirit. She loved cooking and feeding others until their bellies were full. She enjoyed playing bingo, hosting card games, and surrounding herself with family and friends. As the matriarch of her family, she dedicated her life to nurturing her children and grandchildren. Her strength, wisdom, and unconditional love were the foundation of her family.
A devoted woman of faith, Bessie was a longtime member of New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She was blessed with twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love, faith, and family.
Though she has departed this earthly life, the love she shared and the lessons she instilled will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
