Obituary

Betty L. Baker, daughter of the late Carey Thomas and Phyllis Thomas was born June 22, 1937 in Greensville North Carolina. She departed this life of April 24, 2021 after a lengthy battle with a Dementia related illnesses. She fought a good fight until the end.



She attended public school in Greensville, North Carolina. After high school she metand married the late James T. Baker and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She worked several jobs before beginningher career on December 3, 1980 as a Special Police Officer at The World Famous Lexington Market. Betty was both loved and respected her time at Lexington Market. She was firm but compassionate, and she always had time to share God's word with anyone who asked. She was a mother figure and a listening ear to many of the people she encountered daily until she retired with the rank of Corporal on August 14,2014. Betty was so loved that upon her departure her retirement party was attend by Lexington Market executives, members of the Baltimore City Police Department, local officials as well as staff and customers. Even afterwards, people would recognize her around the city. There was no doubt that her presence was valued.



Betty waslong time, devoted member of Saint James Free Baptist Church where she was affectionatelyand lovingly known as "Mother Betty". She served many years as the President of the Usher Board and was also a member of the Vocal Choir. Betty was a leader and a light wherever she went.



She was preceded in death by her parents, Carey and Phyllis Thomas ; daughter, Barbara Baker : brothers, Carey and Doug Thomas and husband, James T. Baker . She leaves to mourn: sister, Pearl Sheppard ; sister in law, Florence Thomas ; three sons, Michael Baker, James E. Baker and Kevin Brown ; daughter in law, Latrena Baker . Grandchildren, Naiya, Iyona, Mykaela, James and Aubrey ; nieces, Patricia Hill , Wanda Sheppard and Vicky Sheppard ; nephews, Earl Thomas, Kennise Thomas and James Sheppard, cousin Peggy Baker, several other cousins and a host of great nieces and nephews along with many other relatives and friends.
