Obituary

Carl Cobbs was born on October 12, 1954 to Mary F. Cobbs and the late John H. Cobbs in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Forest Park High School where he was an average student, a swimmer and played on the Lacrosse team. He later received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Bowie State University. While at Bowie State University, he pledged Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. During his attendance at Bowie State Unversity, Carl was on the swimming team and an active member of the Pan Hellenic Council and Student Government wherein he was elected as Solicitor General. Although he participated in many college activities, he always held his grades as a pripority graduating from college with a 4.0 grade point average. In 1976, he began dating Danita Johnson, and in 1982 they were married. One year later, they welcomed a daughter, Carla to their family. He entered the Baltimore City Department of Social Services in 1979. While working for Baltimore City Department of Social Service, he attained his Master of Social Work Degree from Howard University in 1990. Carl began as a caseworker at Baltimore City Department of Social Services Child Protector Services Unit for the first 12 years of his professional career. After a few years working for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, Carl transferred to the the Department of Juvenile Services where he coordinated foster care placements for young children. Carl became employed at Prince George's County Department of Social Services in 1992 as a Shelter Care Supervisor. After leaving Prince Georges County Department of Social Services, Carl returned to Baltimore City Department of Social Services as a unit administrator in Child Protective Services Intake Unit. Carl recently became a Program Administrator for Family Support Services and the Office of Male Initiatives as the Baltimore City Departmentof Social Services. Carl was active on many committees and always took his career seriously. He was also active in the neighborhood community and the Vice President of the Meadows Community Organization for many years. Carl was a loving and devoted person who had a positive impact on many people. He achieved many family, social and career accomplishments despite an underlying kidney problem. After enduring a few painful and tiring years of dialysis, his sister Jean matched as a donor for a kidney transplant. She donated her left kidney to Carl in 1994, and this transplant was so successful and the story was so touching , it made the local news. Radio Stations and WBAL-TV interview Carl and Jean in his home and the story aired on the evening news. He leaves behind; his wife, Danita Cobbs; daughter, Carla Cobbs; mother Mary F. Cobbs; father, John Cobbs, who preceded him in death; two sisters, Sabreen Sharif and Jean Alston; brother, Graylin who preceded him in death; two brothers-in-law Mustafa Sharif and Bradley Alston; mother-in-law, Claudette Raiford; sister-in-law, Dionne Fleming; several neices, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
