Cecelia Alma
Press
February 3, 1932 – April 26, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cecelia Alma Press, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, who departed this life peacefully on April 26, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on February 3, 1932, in Baltimore, Maryland, Cecelia was the daughter of the late Charles and Grace White.
Cecelia's formative years were spent in Baltimore, where she attended Frederick Douglass High School. Following her passion for learning, she pursued further education at the Cortez W. Peters Business School in Washington, D.C. Her academic pursuits laid the foundation for a life dedicated to service and community.
Cecelia married the love of her life, Gilbert Press, with whom she shared many beautiful years until his passing. Together, they built a family rooted in love, respect, and resilience. Cecelia was predeceased by her beloved husband, her parents, Charles and Grace White, and her siblings, Shirley, Harold, Donald, Norman, Edward, Bobby, and Avon.
A devoted mother to her son, Zachary Press, Cecelia's unwavering love extended to her two granddaughters, Monica Jones (Daylan) and Zari Press, and her great-grandchildren, Jalen and Janelle. Her family was her pride and joy, and she dedicated her life to their happiness and well-being.
Cecelia’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately bestowed upon her the name “Nan,” a title lovingly earned through her devoted care of Monica, Zari, and Jalen during their earliest years.
Cecelia found fulfillment in her career as a teacher's aide in the Baltimore City Public Schools, specifically, Grove Park Elementary School. Her warmth and dedication touched the lives of countless students and colleagues, leaving an indelible mark on the community she served so faithfully.
An active member of the Leadenhall Baptist Church, Cecelia's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She also contributed significantly as the secretary of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), where her leadership and commitment championed the preservation and celebration of African American culture and history. As a proud member of the Red Hat Society, Cecelia embraced life with vibrancy and grace, always donning her favorite color, red, with flair.
Cecelia's passions were as varied as they were meaningful. She found joy in shopping, tending to her garden, and entertaining with her culinary delights. Even in her later years, she demonstrated remarkable determination and adaptability, learning to drive at the age of 58 to ensure her granddaughter, Monica, could attend school. Her ability to remake herself after becoming a widow was a testament to her resilience and strength.
Cecelia Alma Press's legacy is one of love, dedication, and an unyielding spirit. Her impact on the lives of those who knew her will be cherished and remembered for generations to come. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered, as her spirit continues to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
