Obituary

Retired Major Charles A. Johnson, Sr.the son of the late Samuel and Amamda Johnson, was born October 21, 1938 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He called home on April 21, 2007, after a lenghty illness. At the early age of twelve he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In February 1956, Charles joined the National Guard. Upon graduation from Johnstown High School in June 1956, he joined the United States Army where he served for 22 years, retiring as a Major in 1978. While in the military, he graduated from Upper Lowa University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree CuLaude in Public Administration and from Central Michigan University with a Master of arts Degree in Business Managerment: Managerment and Supervision. Charles met and was uited in Holy Matrimony to Carol Mayers Johnson. They shared forty-two wonderful years together. From that union were four children, Lawrence, Karen, Charles Jr., and Angela. Throughout his military career, he served in many foreighbn countries such as South Koren, Germany, Japan, Thailand and South Vietnam to name just a few. From this experience he developed a love for travel, which he and his wife Carol alwayss enjoyed. During his military career, Charles became very involved with community work, including coaching; serving as President of the Black Interest Group in Japan; singing in the Black Interest Groups Gospel Choir; and was Chairman of the Boy Scout troop committee. He was a founding member of the Baltimore Opera Supers, a member of King David Lodge #18, Prince Hall Grand Lodge, F & AM, President of the Beta Sigma Tau Fraternity, Treasurer of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Association, and past President of the Suttle Family Reunion. Since joining Leadenhall Baptist church in 1996, Charles became an active member of the Brotherhood Ministry, Male Chorus Ministry, Sunday School Ministry and he faithfully attended the Noon Day Prayer and Praise Service. In addition, he was selected by the Brotherhood to be the Chairman of the 4th Annual Men & Women's Day. In 1998 Charles became a member of the Trustee Board. He was on the Budget Committee and was an Advisor to the Junior Nurses. Charles loved his family and was a devoted father. he took pride in amateur photograpy, singing karaoke, and just entertaining his family and friends with his witty sense of humor. He received joy from helping others and brought a smile to everyone he met. He always strived to be a true ''servant'' of the Lord. He will be sadly missed. Those left to embrace the love he gae and shared are: his loving wife, Carol Johnson; two sons, Lawrence Johnson and Charles Johnson, Jr.; two daughters, Karen Johnson-Hill and Angela Johnson Price; two sons-on-law, James Hill and Willie Price III; brother, James Johnson; four sisters, Carolyn Beach, Anne Allen, Sylvia Dennis and Joyce Palmore; nine brothers-in-law, James Beach, James Allen,Herman Dennis, Cifford Palmore, Nathaniel D. Mayers deceased, Keyburn Mayers, Randolph Mayers deceased, Ronald Buchanan deceased and MackReynolds; four sisters-in-law, Anne Reynolds, Betty Buchanan, Janet Johnson and Barbara Joyce Mayers deceaded; four grandchildren, Carols Johnson, Robin Smith, James Johnson and Willie Price IV; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews,nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
