IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Chambers,
Sr.
September 10, 1927 – November 5, 2017
CHARLES CHAMBERS, SR. was born September 10, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland, one of eight children born to James and Carsie Chambers. On November 17, 1934 he was struck by a car resulting in injuries which left him with optic nerve damage and tunnel telescopic vision, ultimately rendering him legally blind.
Although the Physicians from John Hopkins Hospital informed his mother that he would not live to see forty, and that he would never read or write, this devastating set-back did not prevent him from graduating from Dunbar High School, receiving a B.S. degree from Hampton Institute, and his masters' degree from the University of Maryland College Park.
Charles was an accomplished writer getting his initial recognition as a Dunbar High School student in 1943 when one of his poems was selected and published in the National High School Poetry Anthology. His first book of poems entitled " Sunlight on Verse" was published in 2013 to great reviews. In October of 2017, Charles received a Certificate of Recognition for his participation in the Silver Pen Writing Contest sponsored by the Baltimore County Department of Aging. In addition to writing Charles loved sports. At Dunbar High School Charles was a track athlete; following in the footsteps of his older brother Eddie. As a 100 and a 200 yard sprinter, Charles participated in regional track meets against high schools in Washington D.C. and in New Jersey. He loved the Orioles, the Ravens, and gardening.
Charles was a devoted and dedicated member of Concord Baptist Church. His father James Chambers, Sr. was a charter member who helped to shape the beginnings of Concord Baptist Church. Charles gave his heart to the Lord at age 14. He became a Deacon in 1960 under the leadership of Reverend Matthew R. Silver. Charles was very active throughout his seventy-six year membership. He was a member of the Senior Choirs I and II, as well as the Male Chorus. He served for many years as a Sunday School. teacher, a member of the Laymen's League, the Boy Scouts Support Group, the Baptist Training Union, and with his wife Deaconess Agnes Chambers was involved with the Couples Ministry.
During his 24 year career with Baltimore City Public Schools, Charles was instrumental in re-writing the curriculum for the school system; devoting an entire summer to the task along with a team of educators. He was a guidance counselor at Booker T. Washington Junior High School and retired as a counselor from Garrison Junior High School.
Charles was also very active in the Family Care and Drug Treatment Center Ministry, was an Adult Advisor to the youth for the Annual Youth Retreat of the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Mary- land, and with his wife organized the Social Welfare Ministry. He also served as a guidance counselor in the Peer Counselor's After School Drug Prevention Program.
He served as Chairman of the Deacons Ministry and provided guidance and administrative direction to the congregation during the period when the church was without a pastor.
His favorite scripture comes from 1 John 5:14-15; This is the confidence we have in approaching God, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have what we asked of Him.
Charles leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 63 years; Agnes Williams Chambers, two sons: Charles Cleveland, and Keith Jerold, two daughters:
Carol Chambers Lewis, and Sharon Michelle Williams; two sisters: Irene Hood and Angie McCullough; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and a loving and devoted church family, which he adored. Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Carsie Chambers, and brothers James [r., Eddie, and Evans.
