He was educated in the Baltimore City School System. He
enlisted in the Army of the United States on March 4, 1943 and
separated in December 4, 1945 with an honorable discharge. He
was a certified electrician and a machinist. He was a (trooper)
survivor of World War II.
Following his honorable separation from the Army he immediately
was employed for Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point in 1946.
He worked as a Rigger. He then furthered his education by
attending night school and became a Foreman of the Coke
Ovens, where he later retired in 1984.
Father married his high school sweetheart, he met while attending
elementary school #122 on February 10, 1944, Frances E.
Epps (Mother) preceded him in death on June 24, 2004. From
this lovely union five children were born, Jarcene A. Newman,
Charles E. Gardner Sr., Kurt R. Gardner, Karen L. Gardner,
Shawniece R. Gardner.
Father was a very lively person and a jokester, he loved to play
cards, visit his brothers and sisters. He was raised as a catholic
and served as an alter boy. Father was very family oriented man
and a loving husband, father, sibling, grandfather, great grandfather,
and uncle.
Father was preceded in death by eight siblings. At the time of his
departing .he leaves behind: five children, seven grandchildren,
Dwayne T. Gardner Sr., Jornay Newman, Danena Gardner,
Jewel Gardner, Jennice Gardner, Laressa Cypress, Gardner
Pender; two daughters-in-law, Cathy Gardner and Loretta Gardner;
one sister, Gloria Ashby; one brother, Stanley Gardner; one
brother-in-law, James Pinder Sr.; a whole regiment. of great
grandchildren and great great grandchildren. A host of nieces,
