Obituary

Charles Rogers Robinson, son of Lewis and Mattie Robinson, was born in King William County, VA on May 30, 1925, and raised in Richmond, VA. On February 3, 2007 our beloved father departed this life after a lengthy illness. Commonly known as ''Red'' in his early years, Charles spent 3 years in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school. He attained the rank of Corporal and and was honorably discharged in 1946. Charles entered Virginia State College after his military, and was an outstanding athlete. After transferring to Morgan State College, Charles experienced a stellar varsity football and boxing team career at Morgan. He co-captained both the football and boxing teams. Charles was awarded Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association CIAA and All-American honors while on two championship football teams. He even won the heavyweight division CIAA boxing title. Charles was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. An all around athlete; Charles was a professional wrestler as well as a semi-pro baseball player. Charles was drafted by the NFL Green Bay Packers in 1951. He also played for the Baltimore Colts during his football career. Charles married the former Mazie Price who preceded him in death. Out of this twenty-five year union were born two children, Chartruse and Charell. Charles was a loving husband, dedicated father and hard working provider. In 1958 he joined the Baltimore City Recreation Department. Most notable, Charles Robinson was named Director of John Eager Howard Recreation Center in the mid-1960's. This was the start of an illustrious 20-year-plus endeavor at John Eager Howard and in the surrounding community, Reservoir Hill. Mr. Robinson became a pillar of the community, father to all and a driving force in the life of the children in the community. He head coached the Baltimore Rams football team and Baltimore Neighborhood Basketball League Starlites to many championships. Over the years Charles was inducted into; HALL OF FAME BNBL LEAGUE, HALL OF FAME MEMBER MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, HALL OF FAME PARK HEIGHTS FOOTBALL LEAGUES. Charles had an entrepreneurial spirit. He was a real estate investor and owner and proprietor of ''Bull'' Robinson Liquors for more than 20 years. Charles was also a member of the Montford Point Marine Association, Chapter 17. At the time of his death, Charles had been an active member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was a faithful member devoting his time to serving on numerous committees. Charles loved hunting and fishing, commonly sharing his 'catch' with friends and loved ones. He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Chartruse; son, Charell; brothers, Harry and Claiborne Robinson; sisters-in-law, Doris Birkhead, Marguerite Price, Zelma Price, Margaret Robinson and Virginia P. White; cousins, nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.
