Obituary

Charlotte Virginia Tires was born in Baltimore City, Maryland to the late Charles Lee Banks and Bertina Jackson. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. On Saturday, January 4, 2025, while at her home, she transitioned and was supported by her loving family after a brief illness.

She attended Baltimore City Schools as a youth and later returned to receive her high school diploma from Baltimore City College in 2012,at the age of 68! This by far was one of her most proud accomplishments.

Charlotte was always known as a dedicated hard worker. During her career, she was employed as a factory worker at the Alford Packaging Company and Park Sausages Factory. After several years of working as a factory worker, she later became employed at the Hedwin Corporation as a Forklift Operator/Extruder Mechanic, where after approximately 35 years of dedicated work she subsequently sailed into retirement.

Charlotte truly enjoyed life with simple pleasures. In the 70's, she was the treasurer of the Just Us Sociables neighborhood club that she and other women organized. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, cruising, and staying active in the community. Some of her pastimes were chatting with loved ones, completing word and board puzzles, watching favorite tv shows, and playing electronic games on her computer. She was an animal and nature lover. Tending to tropical fish, birdwatching, and caring for her dogs,Coffee and Spunky well into their teen years!

She was a community advocate who had an affinity for children. For several years, she volunteered as an aide at the Druid Heights Community Center. There, she worked in the after-care school program serving meals to school-aged children in "Mrs. Charlotte's Kitchen" as the staff affectionately named it The children were the highlight of her day! After mealtime, she assisted as a tutor and taught basic life skills to the young ones. She was instrumental in shaping the neighborhood during the Druid Heights monthly community meetings as she would address concerns related to the Druid Heights/Sandtown area in west Baltimore City. She was recognized in the community newsletter as an impactful leader in the community.

Charlotte loved the Lord and was a dedicated member of the New Psalmist Baptist Church. She first visited the church at the Druid Hill and North Avenues location and joined the church family and was baptized later. She was a member for over three decades and was instrumental in leading others to Christ and joining the New Psalmist family. She had the ability to reach people in a deep and passionate way. She was known for her quick wit, and her kind and compassionate spirit.

Charlotte is survived by her loving husband, James Tires,Jr.; two daughters, Denise and Sheila Tires; two grandchildren, Brandon Neal and Bryanna Holston; two nephews, Victor and Troy Stepney; close cousins, Deborah Houston, Barbara Reed, and Betty Anne Bell and a host of great nieces, great nephews and cousins and friends who treasured her dearly. She was preceded in death by her only sister, Mildred Ann Stepney who together had a special and unbreakable bond.
