CO RENE ALSTON was the eighth of thirteen children born to the lateWillie Ruffin Alston and Martha Jane Alston on June 26, 1930 in Inez, NorthCarolina. She departed this life on March 2, 2020 in Fayetteville, NorthCarolina surrounded by her loving daughter and son-in-law.
She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a very young age and was baptizedat the St. Stephen Baptist Church in Warrenton, North Carolina.Corene graduated from John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, NC in1949. In 1952 she moved to Brooklyn, New York where she worked severalclerical jobs in Brooklyn and New York City. While living.in New York,shebelonged to Fountain Christian Church in Brooklyn.After moving to Baltimore in 1964, she was employed at Johns HopkinsHospital as a clerk and then at the Social Security Administration inWoodlawn,Maryland for 25 years.
Corene was multi-talented and had a variety of special interests. She was quitea skilled bowler and bowled in several leagues in the Baltimore area. She wasa fitness guru and enjoyed power walking and yoga. She was a fashion iconwith a great taste in clothes. While in New York, she was lead singer in TheStarlites, which was a Brooklyn-based gospel group.Corene was wellknown for her culinary skills. She was a great cook andloved to bake. Those who worked at the Social Security Administration duringher tenure will speak of the fabulous desserts she prepared that were alwaysin demand. She could probably have started her own bakery right there inWoodlawn. After retiring from the Social Security Administration, Co rene
returned to North Carolina, her home state, first to Warrenton and then toFayetteville in 2010 to live with her daughter and son-in-law.Everyone who knew Corene, has a "Corene story" and the common elementamong stories that are shared will speak of her kind, gentle, loving spirit. Shewas a soft-spoken woman with a tremendous heart who made sure that her family and friendsknew how much she loved them. Corene lived with astrong sense of commitment to all of her endeavors. In 1975, she became adevout Jehovah's Witness.
Co rene was preceded in death by nine of her Siblings: James Alston, WillieAlston, Elizabeth Alston, Robert Alston, Washington Alston, Sexton Alston,Jennie Alston, Arlena Richardson, and Letha Ann Carrie Alston.She leaves to cherish the memory of a life well lived: her devoted daughter andson-in-law, Mia and Stephen Singleton of Fayetteville, NC; one sister, DorothyBurgess, Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Thomas Alston, Baltimore, MD andGeorge Alston, Warrenton, NC; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Yancey, GlenBurnie, MD and Wilma Alston, Knightdale, NC; onegrandson, Travis Singleton,Charleston, SC; two granddaughters, Rochelle (Chad) White, Charlotte, NCand Brittany Drayton, Charleston, SC; one great-granddaughter, EmersonWhite, Charlotte, NC; and one great-grandson, Ryland Willis, Charleston, SC;a special nephew, Daryl Alston, Baltimore MD; two special nieces, TrumillaBurgess and Adia Coleman, Baltimore, MD; a special cousin, Dorothy Smith,of Washington, DC; and several special girlfriends to include Alexis Morton,Baltimore, MD, Marion Perry, Raleigh, NC, Arlemmah Shakoor, Youngstown,OH, Vivian Wallace, Laurel, MD; and a host of nephews, nieces, other familymembers and friends.
