Obituary

CURTIS JONES, age sixty-nine, known to many Baltimoreans over the past years for creative floral arrangements, died on April 30, 2009 at University Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Baltimore, Curtis was the youngest child born to the late Genevieve and Clarence Jones. His family, which figures prominently in the rich history of Maryland's Howard County, traces its roots to the emergence of the twentieh century there. Curtis attened Baltimore City schools and later had a brief military career with the paratroopers in Fort Bennings, GA. Mr. Jones later turned his attentions to floral design, for which he became known. Much of his extraordinary work was done at the once popular West End Florist located at the corner of Baltimore and Gilmor Streets. A private person, gifted and multi-talented, with a love and ability for singing, Curtis concertrated much of his effort toward brightening the lives of family members with floral arrangements for all occasions, often at his own expense. That brought great joy to his life. To nieces and nephews "Uncles Curtis" was especially benevolent. as some grew to achiece success in their lives, they attributed much to the inspiration which came from him. Curtis now joins predeceaed siblings Clarence Jones, Carolee McCroery and Lily May Brown, all of Baltimore. He is survived by two sister's, Mrs. Genevieve Matthews and Mrs. Gladys Clash, both of Baltimore. His surviving brothers are Elmer "Al" Jones of Long Island, NY, Earl Jones and Joseph Thomas Jones of Baltimore. An exhaustive list of his surviving relative includes entertainers, educators, ministers, athletes, writers, artists, health care professionals, law enforcement officers, business adminstrators, designer and a host of others. As liaison between curtis and his family, Monyette Swann, a devoted nicece, has renderd indispensiable service to her beloved uncle and, thereby, to family throughtout.
