Obituary

Mrs. Denise Rosetta Murel-Porter was born April 10, 1955 to the late Veronica Johnson and Willard Mure1 Sr. in Baltimore, MD. She was the third of eight children and the only daughter. Denise (called by many Niecy) received her formal education through Baltimore City Public Schools. She pursued studies in Office Administration from the Community College of Baltimore (now The Baltimore City Community College). After the birth of her only child she withdrew from college and began working at General Motors.

After leaving General Motors in 1978, Denise was employed at the Baltimore City Public Schools where she worked in the cafeteria over 36 years. She loved her students and each day, served them, the faculty, and staff with the utmost dignity and respect until she was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2014. Denise knew she could not give the students her best so sadly, in June of that year, she retired from the school system to focus on her health.

She was most proud and happy when her son began and graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. She credited her son's continuing praying that lead her to finally get a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Later in her life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and joined the Pentecostal Holiness Church under Bishop Walter Barnes Jr. She loved the music ministry where she praised and worshiped the Lord in spirit and in truth. She was a strong prayer warrior and actively served on the trustee ministry and praise team.

She married her boyfriend of 30 years, the late James C. Porter Jr. and enjoyed married life until he passed away. Denise was a devoted daughter to her parents and aunts, loving mother to her son and grandsons, caring sister to her brothers and their spouses, a terrific aunt to her nieces and nephews, and inspiration to everyone whose life path crossed hers.

To support her battle with cancer her beloved brother Wendell and his wife Linda graciously welcomed her into their home to take care of her. There she began attending worship services at the New Christian Memorial Church under Rev. Dr. Walter Bronson Jr. Her faith in God gave her the strength to endure the fight against cancer.

Denise peacefully transitioned from earth to glory on May 9, 2017. Denise was proceeded in death by: her parents; husband; and five brothers, Tyrone, Richard, Willard Jr., Nathaniel, and Barry Murel. She leaves to cherish: her only son, Percell W. Hobbs; two grandsons, Fonte and Artis; two brothers, Wendell (Linda) and Ronald Murel; two aunts, Gloria Toogood and Dorothy Daily; and a host of nieces, nephews, c
