IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Devell L.
Bank
August 11, 1967 – September 14, 2017
I,
Devell Lavonne Banks
affectionately known as "Veil,'
daughter of Dozine Harding Banks and the late Benjamin Ray
Banks, was born on August 11, 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland. I was
the youngest of three children from that union.
I was educated in the public school system of Northampton
County. I was one of the best cheerleaders to ever stomp through
Gumberry High School. I graduated in 1985, in the first graduating
class from Northampton County High School West. I was accepted
and diligently studied at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth
City, North Carolina.
I began my Christian experience as a child at Roanoke Sa-
lem Missionary Baptist Church in Garysburg, NC. I was baptized and
I was an active member in Sunday School, where I served as the
junior secretary. In my adult years, I practiced the Muslim religion
where I was dedicated to the study of the religious practice.
In the late eighties, I worked as a long-term substitute teach-
er for William R. Davie Middle School in Halifax County, North Caroli-
na. While employed at William R. Davie, I was recognized for having
the class with the highest test scores. After this grand accomplish-
ment, all of the teachers wanted Ms. Banks to sub for their classes.
The late eighties was a difficult time for me. On July 13,
1989, I birthed a beautiful baby girl and I left her to be adopted. For
years I kept this a secret. Look how it all worked out!!! After 28 years,
my baby found me. We were reunited for the first time on August 25,
2017. The memories we made will never amount to the lost time, but
after our reunion, I felt complete. I didn't know I would leave so soon,
but I left with a happy heart because my children had been reunited.
I leave my legacy to live through my Momma (Dozine H.
Banks); my children Malika Banks, Markeeta Bunch, and Malcolm
Banks; my beautiful grandbabies Kalla Banks, Orlandas Powell Jr.
and Omari Powell; my brothers Dwayne Banks (Latissau), Tony
Banks, and Tommy Dunn; my sisters Verbena Boone and Patrena
Bloodworth; four nieces Takia, Monica, Janiyah, and Bria; one neph-
ew Tony Banks Jr.; two great nieces Kali and Amani; two uncles
Garrett Harding and Wiley Harding; three aunts Emma-Dean
Clemonts (Alfred), Lorine Johnson (Harry) and Ann Banks; a host of
cousins whom I grew up with that are more like siblings, and a host
of other relatives and friends to celebrate my free spirit.
