Obituary

DORA LEE HOLLAND departed this life on Sunday morning, April 7, 2013 at home after a short illness. She was born on April 22, 1922 in Brunswick County, Virginia; the first born of seven children to the late Percy and Olivia Jackson. When she was six her family relocated to Turner Station, Maryland. She received her secondary education in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She went on to pursue her teaching certification. Dora served as a substitute teacher at the Dickey Hill Elementary School in Baltimore Maryland. Dora married Paul R. Pinkney and of this union she had two sons, Donald and Paul. She later was remarried to the late Thelmon Holland. They raised three sons, Donald Pinkney, Paul Pinkney Jr. and Thelmon Holland. Dora attended Garrison Boulevard United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She was an active member, serving on the Usher Board, Chairman of the Women's Ministry and Outreach Ministry. Dora was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She enjoyed listening to the music of her era and dancing. In addition, she never hesitated to dispense words of wisdom to family and friends. She was a wealth of knowledge, feisty, and a woman of great joy. She was a historian who experienced many rises and falls in Black America. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Thelmon J. Holland Sr.; son, Donald Pinkney; grandsons, Paul Pinkney III and Derick Pinkney; brother, Cleveland Jackson; sisters, Suzy Pierce, Bernice Stewart and Agnes Flight. Dora leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Paul Pinkney Jr. (Joan) and Thelmon J. Holland Jr.; two sisters, Alice Kelly and Eleanor Johnson. Dora was blessed with grandchildren, Lorrine Johnson (Bernard), Sharon Pinkney, Vanessa Pinkney, Paul K. Pinkney (Sybil), Mark Pinkney (Cynthia), Donald and Tosha Pinkney; great-grandchildren, Lattice Johnson, Byron Johnson, Shakeishia Pinkney, Kia Pinkney, Sherie Pinkney, Terrell Pinkney, Donyelle Pinkney, Mark Pinkney Jr., Jacob Pinkney, Trevor Pinkney and Emrald Culbreath; great-great-grandchildren, Kahlek Pinkney and Nia Meyer; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. God wrapped His arms around you Come My Child, I'll comfort you. I've prepared a place for you No more pain or suffering Your journey is over, I'm taking you home.
