Obituary

Doris Jeffries Johnson, beloved daughter of the late John Henry Jeffries and Isadora Virginia Kess Jeffries, was born July 18, 1922 in Fairfield, Maryland. On Saturday, January 31, 2009, God called Doris home to eternal rest. Doris was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and received her high school dipolma from Frederick Douglas High School. She attended Morgan State college where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Sciene in 1945. After a brief teaching career, Doris became an education counselor for Army personnel at Fort George G. Meade. She continued to work until her retirement in 1980. In addition, Doris received her certification to become a contact counselor from Contact Teleministries, USA, Inc. Doris leaves a legacy that exemplifies a life of commitment to her God and her community. Doris has been a member of Wayland Baptist Church for more than sixty years. She served on the Equipping council, The Ladies Guild, The Scholarship Ministry, Budget Ministry and the Thursday morning bible Study class. Doris dedicated her time and efforts to supporting the education of students at Morgan State University through her life membership in the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter of the Morgan State University Alumni Association. She has served on the chapter's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast Committee sinc its conception in 1985. Doris began her lifetime membership in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. while attending Morgan State. Upon graduation, she continued her membership in the graduate chapter, Alpha Zeta. Doris had a strong appreciation for love of music and fine Arts. She joined the Pierians, Inc. and became a Docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art BMA where she volunteered for ten years. Her community involvement also included membership in the League of Women Voters of Baltimore City. She leaves to cheerish her memories; a daughter, Joyce H. Subject; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis E. and Jacquelyn Howell; a grandson Brain E. Howeell; stepdaughter, Martha J. Leeper; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James R. and Strelsa J. Jeffries, John T. and Queen E. Jeffries; niecess and nephews, Carole A. Jeffries, Norma Jeffries, Delores Jeffries, Strelsa Payne, John and Emily L. Jeffries, Alphonso and Bertha Gorham; and a host of relatives and friends.
