Obituary

Doris Jean Johnson , 86, of Catonsville, MD was called home to her Father, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on June 22, 2018. She was born October 27, 1931, in York County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Willie and Pearl Russell. She is survived by her beloved husband, Austin Johnson.

Doriswas a product of the York County, Virginia Public Schools. She later received her degree in Education and English from Morgan State College (now Morgan State University). After four years of teaching in the Newport News, Virginia School System, she joined the Baltimore City Public School System where she taught for twenty-three more years before retiring in 1987.

On June 26th, 1954, Doris was united in marriage to Austin B. Johnson. God blessed this union with two caring and loving sons, Michael and Mark. They lived in the Waterbury Heights Community of Crownsville, MD for over fifty years where they were very active members of the community association. They loved their neighbors and were beloved in return.

Doris and Austin loved one another and enjoyed so many simple things in life: the beauty of nature, traveling, playing cards, music, theater, and family gatherings. She had a passion for shopping, especially for "sales". She not only shopped for herself and family, but for anyone who would ask.

At an early age, she began her Christian walk at Cary's Baptist Church in York County, Virginia. She lived her faith after moving to Maryland. She transferred her church membership to St. Katherine of Alexandria Episcopal Church to join her husband. She remained active in the congregation for more than sixty years. While there, she served as a faithful communicant in many Christian capacities.

In addition to her loving husband and her two sons, she is survived by a brother, Alvin Russell; 3 grand-children, Jessica, Jarrett, and Justin; and 5 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jaylen, Kaleb, Jayce, and Kayden; aunts, uncles, sisters-in-laws, and many other relatives and caring friends.

A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Angels Chapel at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville on Saturday, July 14, with visitation at 11:00 a.m. and a celebration of life at noon.
