Obituary

Doris Elizabeth Cook, the third child of William Cook Sr. and Viola Beatrice Gross Cook, was born in Baltimore City, on September 14, 1924. She died, in her home, in comfort and in peace, on October 11, 2008. The threads which are interwoven throughout Doris' eighty-four years and which form the tapesty of her life are those of abiding and committed love, strength of character and will, razor-sharp intellect and wisdom. She was a force. Doris was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools. After elementary school, she attended Harvey Johnson Jr. High School, where she recalls having been inspired to write, to speak, and to to teach; she continued to pursue those passions, as vocations and as avocations, throughout her life. In June 1941, at age sixteen, Doris graduated from Fredrick Douglas Senior High School, Thirty-five years, and many summer, weekend and night courses later, including those taken at Cortez Peters Business School 1950-1952, Community College of Baltimore, Community College of Dundalk, and Johns Hopkins McCoy College, Doris received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Morgan State College. In the interim, Doris married her high school beau, James R. Jeffries, with whom she had two children, Carole A. Jeffries and John Marvin Jeffries. When that marriage ended, Doris continued as a single parent; and when the two children had finally, become emancipated and self supporting, she married Nathan Rollins, Sr. Years after Mr. Rollins died, Doris married Ross H. Sye, Sr. whom she lovingly referred to as "Her Joy." All the while she worked as a teacher and/ or counselor, including employment with Cortez Peters Business School 1954-1975, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore City Department of Education, Park Heights Street Academy, and the Maryland Commission for Women. In her spare time, she wrote and had published a collection of Poems, titled "Poetry Delight" copyright 1975, wrote articles on the status of Women In America for "Women's Work" Magazine. She spoke on any occasion presented to her. Doris cherished her membership, since age twelve, at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, where she served as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher, Junior and Young-Adult conference Missionary, council on Religious Education, the Junior and senior Choirs, and, in her senior years, as a member of the "Precious Gems." Doris Cook Sye was predeceased in death by her siblings, Vernon L. Cook, Thelma Cook and Audrey Cook Fergusson. She is survived by her spouse, Ross H. Sye, Sr.; her daughter Carole A.
