Allen-Cogdell
April 22, 1934 – July 25, 2016
Dorothy Allen-Cogdell was born April 22, 1934 in Yazoo City,
Mississippi. She was one of three children born to the late James Owens,
Sr. and Florence Steward. She departed this life Monday, July 25,2016,
after a year-long battle with cancer.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Earl Johnson, Sr. in 1952. That
union produced four children, Bernadette Clarissa, Earl [r., Debbie Ann,
and Vanessa Faye. She later married Edgar Allen, followed by Willie
Foster Codgell, who both preceded her in death.
Miss Dot, as she was affectionately known, obtained her education in the
Baltimore City Public School System, and later, attended Angelo Beauty
School, obtaining the status of Master Beautician during the course of
her career. She was an owner of the Cherry Hill Beauty Salon for close to
30 years. Miss Dot gave her life to Christ in 1965, as a member of
Southern Friendship Baptist Church. Miss Dot also attended Salvation
Restoration Missionary Baptist Church. She later became an active
member of st. Veronica Catholic Church, attending Mass daily when
physically able and, in earlier years, serving as a member of both the
Women's Club and Parish Council. She served three terms as Worthy
Matron of Gethsemane Chapter #34 of the Order of the Eastern Star,
which she joined in 1984 and was an active member while in good
health.
She was a devoted mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, great-
grandmother, niece and aunt. She leaves to mourn her passing her
daughter and beloved son-in-law, Vanessa Arnold and Robert Arnold;
beloved uncle and aunt W. C. Steward and Bobbie Steward; brother,
James Owens, [r.: sister-in-law, Geraldine Owens; granddaughters,
Diontwinette Barnes, Dionne Washington, Nickol Barnes Harris, and
Debbie Arnold; grandsons, Kenyatta Washington; Stanley Arnold, Tyrone
Arnold and Anthony Blunt, Jr., and grandson-in-law Manuel Harris; two
very special nephews and great-granddaughters, Michael Taylor, Jr.,
Andrew Horne, Dannae Barnes and Yejide Washington; nephews, Tony
Owens, James Owens, III; nieces, Francine McLeod, Wanda Dawson,
Robin Williams, April Wilkerson, and Karen Earle; a total of fourteen
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, and a host of other
extended relatives and very special friends. She was also preceded in
death by her son, Earl, and daughters, Debbie and Bernadette.
