Earl graduated from Hillside High School in 1944 and enlisted the next year in the United States Army. At the end of his active military service, he received an honorable discharge and enlisted in the United States Army Reserves with the rank of Sergeant Major. In 1947, Earl met and married Margaret Taylor of Durham, with whom he would build a family - two sons- and share the rest of his exemplary and very productive life. After retiring, Earl returned to teaching at Morgan State University, where he was employed as a remedial mathematics teacher for ten years.
