Obituary

Edith Neoma Dotson, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. L.C. & Eunice Black was born on June 26, 1942 in Hartsville, Tennessee. At age 79, she entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at her home in Gwynn Oaks, Maryland. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior early on at First Baptist Church, Gallatin, Tennessee.

Edith's elementary and secondary education consisted of attending Gallatin's Union Elementary and Union High School. She was a standout athlete and very popular student at Union High achieving accolades as student athlete shining in both Track and Basketball; as a track sprinter and an unstoppable shooting point guard, respectively. Her Middle Tennessee rivals at the time included none other than Olympian Wilma Rudolph. Edith, better known to us as "Edie" would say they battled for bragging rights and she would give her (Wilma) a run for her money. Her talents landed her a basketball scholarship at Natchez Junior College, Mississippi, where she burned the nets for the one-time HBCU. On May 27, 1963, she was awarded an Associate of Arts with honors. In May 2020, in recognition for "excellence in her career as a student-athlete representing the athletic program," Edith "Edie" Dotson was inducted into Gallatin's Union High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

She relocated to Fort Meade Army Base, Maryland. Edith quickly adapted to being an army spouse, supporting the mission and making new friends while settling into the Baltimore community. Her interests lead her to pursue employment opportunities as an entrepreneur. She skillfully operated and managed a successful local small business. Edith turned to the public sector in 1991 serving the City of Baltimore, Department of Public Works until her retirement in 2010. As a Public Works supervisor, Edith connected with Baltimore. She became active in local, state and national politics making lifelong friends in supporting political campaigns that affected positive changes for Maryland and the country at large.

Edith loved to spend time with family and hangout with friends. She loved watching box office hit movies, eating crabs dipped in butter while watching the 4th of July fireworks in the Harbor and cruising the boat on hot summer days. She liked traveling, adventuring and celebrating with friends; visiting abroad in European countries Ireland and Italy with her Baltimore homies highlighting their fun and camaraderie. Homeland, she would seek out family and friends, especially during the Holidays, joking and keeping it real by filling the room with laughter, good times, and fond memories. You can almost hear her loudly saying, "smile y'all" as we posed to capture those Kodak moments. In fact, to Edith her friends are family. She loved and cared for us all in so many ways that one could say she's like a wish came true. Not just once, twice or three times, but Always! —You could count on her for Anything. We will always love you.

She is preceded in death by the late Terry Dotson and brothers Robert Lee, Jack Anderson, Nathan James, William "Billy" James "Pee Wee" Black, Lena Patton and Reece. She is succeeded by brothers Richard and David as well as several other loving relatives. We are all so very blessed having known her love and shared in her laughter, kindness and yes craziness. May she gain her wings from glory while we celebrate her life and legacy. We salute her love, unabashed wit, generosity, strength and leadership. By the grace of God "Go Fly Higher" our phenomenal sweet darling daughter, wife, sister, aunt, and friend.
