Obituary

The sun gracefully rose on January 4, 1925 and peacefully set on February 2, 2007 for Elizabeth Christine Gott, daughter of the late Lelia and Amos Johnson. ''Chris'' a she was fondly called received her earlly education in Person County, North Carolina. She later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she lived for several years before moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Chris accepted Christ at an early age and joined the John Wesley United Methodist Church when it was located on Sharp and Montgomery Streets. Chris married Melvin Gott in 1950. She was employed for several years by Western Electric, Eastern Products and the Baltimore City Board of Education from which she retired. Chris was an active member and served in various offices of the Altar Guild, Everybody's Birthday Club, Communion Stewards, and Senior Usher Board. Chris was very instrumental in helping to start the Junior Usher Boardwhile John Wesley was still in South Baltimore, for which she was honored by the group in June of 2006. Chris worked tirelessly for eleven years shopping, cooking, and serving for the Soup Kitchen. This project resulted from Chris's efforts to feed the needy on Christmas Day twenty years earlier, which she did using her own money. She served faithfully untill her death. One of the highlights in Chris's life was when she received the prestigious Channel #13 Salute for her dedicated service to the John Wesley Church Soup Kitchen. She ws so very proud of this award. When interviewed by the Evening Sun, Chris stated: ''I don't mind, because if I am helping someone else, my living is not in vain. I enjoyed doing for other people who are less fortunate than me''. Everyone who knew Chris could attest to the fact that her life revolved around her loved of church, family, godchildren and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory, two brothers: Beckley and Sammy Skinner of Pittsburgh, Pa; one sister-in-law, Mary Skinner; godchildren: Trinna Parris, Allison Marshall, Donna Van Dyke, Brittany, Cornae Shields, Cortland Sheilds, Jr., Earl Brown, Dawn Ward, and Keith Lashley, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
