On April 12th, 2024, at 1:37pm, evangelist Ella Mae Lawson affectionately known as Mutta or Big Mutt was called home to be with her Lord and Savior at Chesapeake Life Center surrounded by her boys and family. Ella Mae Lawson was born on September 3rd, 1944 in Clarendon County of Summerton, S.C to the proud parents, Deacon Douglas Johnson S and Ella Sampson Johnson. She was one of 9 children to this union. Ella completed he education in the Clarendon County School system. She attended and graduated from Scotts Branch M.S/H.S.
Ella accepted the Lord at an early age and joined the Taw Caw Baptist Church where she was a faithful member until she moved to Brooklyn, New York in the 1950's. Fla Mae met her first husband John [. Mack Sr (Deceased) in South Carolina and from this Union of 15 years they were blessed with four boys John, James aka Ronnie (Deceased) Jamand and Javaul. While in NY Ella worked in the field of early childhood development. She was a loyal member of House of Faith Church of Holiness where her oldest brother the late Apostle Douglas Johnson Jr. was the pastor. While serving as an active member of House of Faith, she directed the youth choir who traveled the state singing and competing in many choir competitions. She also sang on the adult recording choir where she led songs such as "Reach Out" and "Theres Been A Change". She was also known for creating the most elaborate holiday plays for the youth department.
Fa Mae later met Moses Lawson in Maryland during a class reunion and after a long-distance romance from New York to Maryland they celebrated a holy matrimony in 1982. Trom this loving union Montae Lawson, as 5th son was born. Ella moved her and her four sons to Glen Burnie MD where she lived until she transitioned. Moses preceded her in death in 1983. When she moved to Maryland she joined her husband's church John Wesley United Methodist under the leadership of the late Calvin P. Crosson. Ella was known for her beautiful hats, custom dresses and matching handkerchiefs. Ella was a dedicated member and was instrumental in starting and leading the Evangelism committee for many years until her health started to fail her. Fla was instrumental in many ministries such as the young adult usher program, greeter's ministry, Nev. Altreda Saturday Academy, street ministry, vacation bible study, morning prayer and many more.
