Obituary

EMMA CARTER was born to the late Inez Gafford and Archie Gafford on
December 7, 1937 in Appomattox County, Virginia. She departed this life on
January 24, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Emma received her education in the
Baltimore City Public School System. She was employed as a Housekeeper at City
Hospital, now known as Bayview Hospital, until she became a devoted stay-at-
home mother. She served as a deaconess at the New Beginnings Seventh Day
Adventist Church and was a loyal Sabbath class attendee. She also enjoyed
volunteering and assisting with donations at the Saint Vincent De Paul thrift store
in East Baltimore.

Emma loved decorating her home. She had a unique flare of coordinating colors
and fabrics which gave any room a vibrant look. She also enjoyed listening to
gospel music and oldies but goodies soul music. Her favorite gospel duo was Bebe
& CeCe Winans. Her favorite past time included cooking, shopping and tending to
house plants.

Emma was courted by the late Eugene Carter, when they both were twenty years
old. The couple solidified their courtship and was married on June 8, 1959. Out of
their union they had six children: preceding in death Roslyn Dove, preceding in
death Luvenia Carter, James Carter, Clifton Carter, Denise Carter, and Igar
"Punch" Carter. They also had nine grandchildren (one grandson preceding her in
death Damond Wallace) and eleven great grandchildren. Emma was a devoted
wife, mother and friend; she always made sure her family came first.

She leaves to mourn: four children, James Carter, Clifton Carter, Denise Carter and
Igar Carter; one daughter-in-law, Ernestine Carter; three brothers, Archie Gafford,
Robert Gafford and Junior Gafford; two sister-in-laws, Myra Black and Alice
Black; two brother-in-Iaws, Clifton Black and Eddie Ward; nine grandchildren,
Latrice Wallace, Lakish Wallace, Devon Lane, Corey Manning, Davon Carter, Eric
Howard, Skylar Carter, Brittany Carter and Lashelle Tatum; eleven great grand-
children, Ronnie, Matthew, Latrell, D'angelo, Naevon, Chyanne, Damond Jr.,
Jeremiah, Justin, Kamaya and Davon Jr; One godson, Eric Thompson and a host
