Obituary

Emma Mae Craig nee Bunker, daughter of the late Willie Clarence and Willie Josephine Bunker, was born December 6, 1923 in Switchback, West Virginia. She graduated from Tazewell County High School. In 1940, she left West Virginia for Elkton, Maryland where she began working at a defense plant. After the war and through 1954, Emma Worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a nurse's aide. In the early 50's, Emma became a member of Walters AME Church. In 1956, Emma began working for the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Life Insurance Compay from which she retired in 1986 after thirty years. In retirement, Emma spent most of her time taking care of her family. Emma was affectionately called "Moma," "Grandma" and "Big Grandma." She lived in the family home on Park Avenue for more than fourty years; many people called her I-witness News because she knew everything that went on in the neighborhood. While on Park Avenue, Emma enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She especially enjoyed having her family over for Sunday dinners where she always cooked her famous candied yams, macaroni and cheese, potatato salad and greens; she also made the best sweet potato pies and 7-Up cakes. In the early 80's Emma joined Revival Mission Church where she served on the pastor's aide and usher board for several years. Emma enjoyed attending Church service, shopping, travelling, going to theatrical and musical performances, and taking bus trips with her family and friends. Emma was always very independant, even in her later years. At age 75, she joined the First Olive Freewill Baptist Church where she served on the Willing-to-Help Ministry. At age eighty she took her first airplane ride to Charlotte, NC to attend a Family Reunion. Also at age eighty, She moved from her family home in Baltimore City into a Senior Citizen Apartment in Randallstown. Emma loved her new apartment and her new friends. At the apartment she volunteered in various caspacties; sometimes she sat on desk and at other times she helped in the kitchen. During her brief bouts of illness, it was not only her family members who came to see about her, but also her neighbors and friends. After a very brief illness, Emma departed this life on Sunday, October 5. She married the late Marie Felix Craig and from their union four children were born; Marcia, Lois, Martin and Letitia. Her eldest son, Clyde, was born prior to her union with Martie. She had one sister, Susie "City" Dodson and one brother, Clarence "CB" Bunker, both of whom preceded her in death. Emma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, daughter, sister, family member and friend.
