On September 30, 2024, Emma Furtado departed this earth. Emma was the daughter of John Henry Barbee and Sarah Barbee. Emma was the youngest of nineteen children.
Emma completed her education in the Baltimore City School System. She married James Bailey and from that reunion Margaret was born. In 1952, Emma married the late Candido (John) Mendez Furtado. They were inseparable until John's death.
Emma worked at Archer Laundry, and for many years she worked at Fish Laundry too. Emma did domestic work until her eighties. She loved her daughter, grandchildren and family. Emma loved fishing, grocery shopping, dancing and drinking her Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Emma was a kind and generous lady. She was very witty, loved to laugh and joke.
Emma leaves to mourn, one daughter; Margaret Mackey, one son-in-law (Bernard) preceded in death, five grandchildren; Cindy Nicholas, Christine Johnson (Gordon), Antoinette Mackey, Bernard (Moochie) Mackey preceded in death, and Derek Mackey. Seventeen great-grand-children (two preceded in death); twenty-five great great-grandchildren (two preceded in death); one great-great-great grandson; one sister-in-law; Bernice Reid, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
