EMMA LEE HALL, born on January 15, 1927, was the firstborn child to the union of Willie Hall and Ellen Nee Feyell Hall. At an early age, her father moved the family from her birthplace of Jamestown, S.C to New York, NY in search of a better environment to raise his family and to seek job opportunities. She began her elementary school education in the NY public school system. She excelled in school and she loved learning! However, just a few years after moving to NY, her father passed away. Her mother than moved the family to Baltimore, MD to join other family members.
In Baltimore, the family took root and decided to stay. Emma Lee left school at the age of 16, to assist her mother financially and assist with rearing her siblings. However, committed to finishing high school, Emma attended Baltimore City Adult Evening Education and obtained her high school diploma for Douglas High School.
In the early years, Emma Lee worked several jobs to including the old Security Laundry in East Baltimore, and after getting her high school diploma, she went to work for the London Town Manufacturing Co. in Baltimore, MD. She retired after 29 years of exemplary service.
Emma Lee's mother led the family to Fountain Baptist Church in the late 1940s. There, Emma Lee spent the rest of her days as a committed Christian. Emma Lee sang on the choir until she was no longer able to stand on her own. She had a great love and passion for the Sunday school, which she passed on to all her family members. She was known to be a devote Christian, an excellent mother, and a loyal friend to all who knew her. Especially, Ms. Helen Evans and Ms. Elise West, who were road partners, traveling extensively through the years.
Emma Lee was notoriously clean, meticulous in her work, and known throughout her family for her candied sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken.
Emma Lee quickly and peacefully passed through transition on January 4, 2021 at Sinai Hospital, in Baltimore, MD; eleven days shy of her 94th birthday. Emma leaves to cherish her loving memory and celebrate her life, her Son Russell Funnie and daughter in law, Gwen Funnie, her sister Mercides Mazyck, grandchildren, Christopher Funnie and Joscelyn Funnie, her great grandchildren Cecilia Padros, Joseph Funnie (Flotesha), Michael Penn, Jr, Russell Funnie-Penn, and Jazzmin Funnie-Penn. and 15 and counting great great grands. She also leaves a devoted niece Darnell Hartwell, along with nieces Beverly Young, Brenda Leach, Carolyn Fullard, and Johnson Washington. Nephews; Bernard Mazyck (Deralyn), Reginald Mazyck (Donna), Shawn Washington, Levi Mazyck (who predeceased her), and wife Robin. A host of grand nieces and nephews, cousins, church family, and friends. The family extends its gratitude and love for Ms. Hattie Terrell for her loyalty and unstinting support for Emma Lee throughout her life, especially her later years.
