Emanuel Butler , Sr. was born September 16, 1925 to Bessie Butler and Howard Moore in King William County, Virginia. He and his mother moved to Delaware shortly after his birth. He is the oldest of three children, Raymond deceased and Josephine. Known as Bess to family and friends, Emanuel completed his early education in Wilmington and graduated from Howard High School in 1944 where he was a star athlete in football and track and field. Emanuel married his high school sweetheart Elaine Susan Young and this union lasted until her untimely death a few years later. He served in the United Army during WW1 from 1944 through 1946. H served in Japan during that time. After the war, he attended Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia where he graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.
