Evelyn Virginia (Edwards) Greene, the third of four daughters born to the late Melvin Asbury and Pearl Irene (Hammond) Edwards, and the stepdaughter of the late Rev. Laura (Johnson) Edwards, passed from labor to reward on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 11: 10 AM at her home surrounded by her family. Evelyn attended Marley Neck Elementary School and Bates High School located in Anne Arundel County. On October 3, 1946, Evelyn married Clayton Greene, Sr. at the home of Clayton's grandparents, the late Rev. Charles A. Pearmon and Lillie C. Pearmon, located in Freetown. This union was officiated by the late Rev. J.D. Brown, Pastor of Hall United Methodist Church. Evelyn and Clayton recently celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary at a dinner hosted by their family. At a young age, Evelyn joined Hall United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Epworth League (now UMYF), former President of the United Methodist Women, and member of the first Young Adult Choir of Hall United Methodist Church. In addition, Evelyn served as President of the PTA at Freetown Elementary School. Evelyn held several jobs during her career and was no stranger to hard work and commitment. She began working in the fields at Jenkins Farm in Anne Arundel County where she picked beans and ultimately worked side by side with her husband in their own field, planting and harvesting their crops for market. Evelyn worked at the Uniform Factory, the United States Coast Guard, SunBrite Laundry, and as a domestic in her early years. Once her youngest son, David, left home for college, Evelyn began working for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education. She worked at Freetown Elementary School for more than 25 years until her retirement in 1990. Evelyn had many interests. She loved to cook, go on picnics and travel to places like Canada, the Bahamas, Oklahoma, Nevada, Indiana, Virginia, New York, Florida, and New Jersey. In addition, she bowled regularly, played pinochle, and walked at least five miles a day, six days a week. When she would dress up, her suits, hats, and shoes were exquisite and always well coordinated. One annual event that she would look forward to was the Mother's Day Luncheon with her three sisters, hosted by her nephew, Oriey Glenn, Jr. and his wife, Michele. Her sisters, Dorothy Irene Callahan and Helen Marie Glenn, preceded Evelyn in death. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Clayton Sr.; two daughters, Rev. Paulette V. Jones (Richard), Ruth A. Allen; two sons, Judge Clayton Greene, Jr. (Janice), David E. Greene; six grandchildren, Adrian P. Jones (Christy), Antonio R. Scott (Jewel), Monica R. Jones, Patrick V. Allen, Clayton Greene, III, Jonathan C. Greene (Deanna), and eight great- grandchildren; her sister, Bessie Mae Day; her brother-in-laws, Oriey Glenn, Sr. and Rev. Wesley Callahan; her lifelong friend, Dora Levroney; her godson and nephew, Harrison R. Day, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.
