Joyner
January 16, 1934 – April 19, 2019
Evelyn Land Joyner was born January 16,1934, to Alma Cunningham and Benja-
min "Bennie" Land in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father was from Chester, South
Carolina and her mother was from Richmond, Virginia. They met and married in
Fairfield, Maryland.
Evelyn's inspiration to become a nurse began at (6) years old when she helped her
family take care of her younger brother William who had infantile paralysis.
Evelyn and her family lived at 619 Brune Street in West Baltimore. Evelyn at-
tended elementary school at Samuel Coleridge Taylor Colored School #122, attended
Booker T. Washington Junior High School #130, and .graduated Frederick Douglas High
School #450.
In 1955 Evelyn met and married Thomas Joyner. She attended night school to
become a nurse's aide. She applied to Henryton Hospital School for Practical Nursing and
was accepted. Evelyn received her certificate in 1957. She worked at Henryton for a year
as a patient coordinator and later worked at University Hospital as a scrub nurse. She was
accepted at Provident Hospital in 1960 and received her Maryland State Registered Nurse
Recordation in 1963.
Evelyn worked at Provident Hospital for approximately six months before apply-
ing to Western Electric for a position as an Occupational Health nurse. She was hired at
Western Electric in January 1964 and was the first Black nurse to practice at the facility.
In 1974 Evelyn joined the Army Reserves and completed officers' training. She
was commissioned 1 st Lieutenant and was assigned to the 92nd Field Hospital located in
Baltimore. She was instrumental in developing a program that allowed corpsmen to qualify
as LPNs in civilian as well as military service. She was also one of 92nd Field Hospital's
best recruiters. She was honorably discharged as Captain in the 1980s.
Evelyn was transferred to Lucent Technologies at Cockeysville when the Ma Bell
divestiture took place in the late 1980s. She went back to school and received her BS de-
gree from S1. Joseph's College in Maine. She also attended the University of North Caroli-
na, receiving a certificate in Occupational Health and Employee Mental Health. She semi-
retired in 1989 and worked for The Visiting Nurse Association and for Baltimore City
Government. During her career, she received many merit awards and much recognition for
Outstanding Service.
Evelyn loved traveling abroad, fishing, cooking, and collecting coins and com-
memorative postage stamps. She also enjoyed visiting casinos throughout the United
States.
Evelyn's generous, bright and beautiful spirit will always be cherished in the lives
of her children: son Mel Land of Arizona, daughter Sharon Joyner Allen of Baltimore,
Maryland, and Edward M. Jackson of Baltimore who she raised after the death of her sis-
ter, Mary Jackson. She is also survived by a loving and devoted friend, Herbert Parham,
daughter-in-law, Da'relle Land of Arizona; five grandchildren: Ashley Land Jacobs of
Texas, Collin G. Land of Arizona; Trevon, Lynta and Tavon Jackson of Baltimore; neice
Imani Land Nelson of New Jersey, and a host of other devoted family members and
friends.
