IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn
Simmons
October 2, 1934 – August 29, 2016
Evelyn Lee Simmons, "Bumsey", was born October 2,1934 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was one of two children born to Delores Whidbee. Evelyn passed away on August 29,2016.
She was a strong, dedicated and devoted mother. At the age of 23, she lost her husband, Earl Leon Simmons. Faced with the task of raising five children, she persevered with the help of her mother and sister as well as with a host of family and friends. The late sixties brought her childhood friend, Milton Harris "Nick", back into her life. He became her constant companion until his death in 2009.
Evelyn was a hardworking and dependable person. Through the years, she was employed at various jobs but she retired in 1995 as supervisor of housekeeping at the Omni Inner Harbor Hotel. In 1981, Evelyn was on the task force to train the housekeeping staff at the Marriott Hotel in La Guardia, New York. It was her first airplane trip.
Evelyn loved music from Johnny Mathis and Rod Stewart to Motown and R&B. She danced the Madison and played a mean hand of pinochle. She watched the Orioles, the Colts and later the Ravens and loved puzzle books.
In 2006, Evelyn was diagnosed with dementia. She fought a long hard battle until her death. Even though this deadly disease took her memory, speech and later her ability to walk and eat, Evelyn knew her children, her grand and great grandchildren. We as her survivors believe in our hearts that she knew us all.
Before Evelyn went home to God, she was being cared for by the staff at Keswick Multi-Care Center. Her children would like to thank the staff there- especially the aides and nurses and even the ones that were not assigned to her. They sat with her; held her hand and prayed for her.
Evelyn leaves to mourn: sons - Stanley, Robert, Ernest Simmons and Jay Harris; daughters -Vivian and Brenda Simmons; grandsons- Stanley Jr, Jarrod and Terell Simmons; granddaughters - April, Stacy Simmons and Patrice Williams; eight great grandchildren - Lamar, Justin, Jordan, Synia, Stanley III, Shamar, Kayla, Alana - one great, great-grandchild Lamar Jr., daughter in law Betty, her brother in law James Simmons as well as a host of family and friends.
