FANTAHUN TADESS ASFAW, son of the late Tadesse Asfaw and Herit Gebrekristos, was born on October 9th, 1959 in Axum, Ethiopia. He departed this life on November 5th, 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland after having complications of the heart. Fantahun was called "Fanta" by his loved ones and "Woldesgebriel" was his baptismal name. He received his education at Axum Comprehensive Secondary School in Axum, Ethiopia and Teachers Training School in Addis Ababa. Upon completion of his education, he taught History and Geography at Ghion High School in Wolliso, Ethiopia. In 1985 he attended a twelve week course in English as a second language and cultural Orientation conducted by ICM in Khartoum, Sudan prior to departure for the United States. Accepted to the United States as a refugee, Fanta had no restriction on employment and worked for the Union Memorial Hospital for several years. Fanta was a very kind and peaceful soul with a loving and generous heart. He was always a true friend and devoted father. He made numerous friends wherever he went and will be sincerely missed by all who knew him. He was always intrigued by politics and loved reading the newspaper. He enjoyed sports, reading, watching television and spending time with his grandson. Fanta is preceded in death by his parents, Taddesse Asfaw, Herit Gebrekristos and his sister Tarekech. He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by: his three brothers, Weldeslasse, Yeftalem and Leaul; sister, Abeba; daughter, Ashley Asfaw; grandson, Jahvin Williams; a devoted friend, Joan Marie Edwards Toler; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
