Obituary

Fletcher Asbury Clark, son of the late Fletcher and Helen Clark was born in Brooklyn, Maryland on August 13, 1929 during the beginning of the Great Depression. Fletcher grew up in Maryland with his two brothers, Norman and Melvin, and his sister, Helen. He graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School in Annapolis. He served in the United States Army where he boxed and played softball. At the age of 25, he married Frances Tucker and they had two daughters, Wanda and Brenda Clark. Fletcher worked at Sparrows Point in Baltimore as an ironworker for 30 years, during which time he married Alto "Pat" Patterson and was a loving stepfather to John, Michael, Jay, Sherry and Tina. Fletcher loved competition and as the years went by, he honed his expert skill in the game of checkers. He enlisted in several tournaments and earned the name "The Champ" beating his opponents. Fletcher joined the Capital Pool Checkers Club in Washington, DC. In 2010, a film documentary and book were published entitled Crown Me, where Fletcher was pictured on the cover with eleven other members of the club. Fletcher was a man that even in sickness would always have a smile on his face every time you saw him. He will be greatly missed. Fletcher leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Helen "Buggie" Bouyer, his daughter, Wanda Clark Whorton; his stepchildren, John Patterson, Michael Patterson, Jay Patterson, Sherry Bowie and Tina Turner; his grandchildren, Jaryn Colbert and Saige Colbert, step grandchildren, Jerome Patterson, Michael Patterson II, Naim Al-Ali, Sandra Patterson, Tylynn Bowie, Serena Kefauver and Angelica Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Apollo [ace, step great- grandchildren, Jerome Patterson II, Jasmine Patterson and Jordan Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and close friends.
