FLORINE ELIZABETH POWELL was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Mervin Abraham Garner and Irene Alice Carner-Nicholas on August 17, 1931. God called her to eternal glory on December 25, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Florine was the third oldest of eleven children. She attended and graduated from Baltimore City Public School. After high school she completed nursing school and took the state board test and received her LPN license. She worked as a nurse at Levindale Nursing Home. She also did private duty work after she retired. She married Leroy Powell on January I, 1949 who preceded her in death. From this union seven children were born and two preceded her in death, Cynthia Conley and Tyrone Powell. She loved her family unconditionally. Florine loved to knit and sew. She was an Avon Representative for 20+years. She also loved to cook, with her specialties being deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, and sauerkraut and pigtails. Florine was an active member of Mount Hope Baptist Church for over forty years. She and her sister, Mertina Fleming (deceased) had a strong spiritual bond, in as much, they were nicknamed Mary and Martha. She served faithfully on the Missionary Board as well as Senior Choir, Gospel Choir and the Floral Circle until her health no longer permitted it. She was a mighty woman of God and known for her fervent prayers. She leaves to mourn: her children, Leroy (Jerry) Powell [r., Debra Powell, Diana Wallace, Kevin Powell and Valerie Edwards; four siblings, Allois (Stewart) Garner, Kay Ferrell, Hortense Cannady and Alice Gaskins; sister-in-law, Leah Garner; one brother-in-law, Raeford Gaskins; eighteen grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends, including two special friends, Sisters Margaret Hicks and Esther Harris.
