He married Juanita Pauletta Dixon on May 8, 1954, who preceded him in death on September 21, 1992. Out of that union four children were born, Foster C. Smith, Jr., Gregory D. Smith, Warren A. Smith and Sheila D. Smith-Johnson. He later married Carolyn E. Smith who also preceded him in death on November 3, 2011. No children were born of that union. Foster enjoyed traveling, football, baseball, concerts, jazz shows and the beach. His favorite show was 60 Minutes and he preferred not be disturbed during viewing.
