IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frances R.
Gaines
February 1, 1922 – August 9, 2016
Frances Rosetta Gaines , 94, transitioned peacefully from her home in Baltimore, Maryland and into the kingdom of heaven on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.
Mother Gaines was born February 1, 1922 in Smithville of Caroline County, MD. She was the youngest of four children to Goldsborough and Rosa Wilson, and was united in marriage in 1946 to the late Sylvester Gaines.
In 1953 Mother Gaines and "Vest" moved to 2115 North Longwood Street in Baltimore, MD. For over 60 years Mother Gaines served as a significant pillar in the community, and has been honored with numerous awards from the City of Baltimore and neighborhood organizations.
Mama Frances worked 39 years as a domestic for the Rogers family, and was active well into her golden years. Her presence at the Sandtown Senior Center displayed her zeal for life. She was an exercise and line dance coach, made numerous ceramic sculptures, traveled extensively, and successfully completed computer class.
She enjoyed time with family and friends. Mama loved "learning" to drive, which always led to her in the passenger seat and a trip to lunch. Shopping was her favorite pastime, especially to Macys.
A devout Christian, Mother Gaines started her spiritual journey at St. Paul Methodist Church on Schroeder and Saratoga Streets. Her greatest
commitment was to John Wesley United Methodist Church on W. North Ave. where she served on the Gospel Choir.
God strengthened Mama to survive her husband as well as her three siblings, Mildred Walker, Helen Wilson and Goldsborough Wilson. Mother Gaines also survived six of her seven children; Mabel Kelly, Grace Jackson, Helen Harris, Rosa Gaines, Joseph Gaines, and her baby boy Robert Gaines, who lovingly cared for her until his death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: son, Goldsborough Sylvester Gaines, Sr. (Margaret); 12 grandchildren, Louis, Tonjia, Sarita, Eric, (Kishia, deceased), Ursla, Marsha, Tionne, Goldsborough Jr., Vernon, Anthony, Kimwanna and Alethia (Lisa); 33 great grandchildren; a devoted great niece and caregiver, Michelle Thomas (Missy); a multitude of nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
