Obituary

George Washington Johnson, Sr., son of the late Rufus Johnson and Verna Lee Tapp, departed this life peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. He was born on February 22, 1933 in Roxboro, North Carolina. Having all sisters, he had a special bond and love for each of them. George or "R.J." after his father was a joyful man who was full of life and laughter. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories of his life in Roxboro. Singing, dancing and listening to spirituals were some of his favorite passions. He gave himself to Christ at an early age and stayed with him throughout his life. George received various certificates and awards from greater New Hope Towers for his Bible Study Classes and was loved and respected by everyone. He married Hilda Bailey of Roxboro, North Carolina and to this union three children were born. In later years he relocated to Baltimore, Maryland and fathered five children by his current wife, Mary Patterson-Johnson. George is survived by his wife, Mary P. Johnson; five daughters Dinetta J. Lawson Wilmer and Phiillis Johnson of Roxboro, North Carolina daughter, Georgia Ann Johnson preceded him in death, Tammy E. Graham Corey, Marcella Johnson and Marcia Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland; two sons, Tony Johnson of Durham, North Carolina and George W. Johnson Jr., of Baltimore, Maryland; four sisters, sister, Eloise Dargan preceded him in death of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mae Francis Edwards of Baltimore, Maryland, Queen Curran Horace of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Virginia Brooks of Baltimore, Maryland and Vernitta J. Day Walter of Roxboro, North Carolina; a brother-in-law, William Dargan of Bridgeport Connecticut;an aunt Mary Ann Tapp Williams of Baltimore, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Anthonio, Anthony, Torey, Latora, Terrell, Tyshawna, Montrell, Keyona, Brittney, and Kanesha; and a special young man who is like a grandson, Travis Taliaferro; and a host of other relatives and friends.
