Obituary

GERALDINE MACER , beloved daughter of the late Abraham Moses and Sarah Cottrell, was born on November 14, 1937, in Wattsville, Virginia. She departed this life on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Northwest Hospital, following a long illness.

Geraldine began her early education in the public schools of Accomack County, Virginia. In 1950, she moved from Wattsville, Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland to live with her father and step-mother, Velma Moses. Geraldine continued her studies and later graduated from Frederick Douglass High School where she met Robert. Her dedication to service and professional growth led her to further her education by taking courses at Catonsville Community College.

Geraldine attended Friendship United Methodist Church as a young girl with her mother in Wattsville, Virginia. She worshiped on occasion at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

On February 24, 1956, Geraldine married the love of her life, the late Robert L. Macer, and from their union one son Orlando Macer was born.

Geraldine began her career with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration in Glen Burnie, Maryland. She later joined the Federal Government at the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, Maryland, starting as a Clerk Typist. Her hard work, commitment, and exceptional ability led to her advancement to a position as an Equal Opportunity Specialist in the Office Equal Employment Opportunity. Throughout her years of service, she received several awards—including a monetary citation recognizing her exemplary leadership in evaluating affirmative action plans, assisting field staff during oral reviews, and helping to implement a new computer system used for equal opportunity data analysis. She was also honored with a Superior Performance Award, a recognition she held dear.

After her retirement, Geraldine developed a deep passion for politics. Her favorite television program was Inside Politics on CNN. She enjoyed spirited discussions—sometimes right along with the television commentators and was never hesitant to write or call elected officials to express her views. She contacted Senators, Congressmen, the White House and even both major political parties when she felt her voice needed to be heard. Geraldine faithfully read two newspapers every day, seeking insight, opinions, and updates on the issues of the day.

Geraldine loved the arts, especially Broadway theater. She enjoyed bus trips to New York City for shows, often traveling with her cousin Edward under the sponsorship of the Golden Cross Society of John Wesley United Methodist Church. She also visited with her Aunt Eff and family every summer in Wattsville, Virginia. A gifted cook, she delighted in experimenting with desserts and sharing them with family, friends and co-workers. Her famous crab cakes with shrimp were loved by all—"and boy, were they delicious!"

Geraldine and Robert warmly hosted many holiday gatherings in their beautiful home, welcoming family, colleagues and close friends. She treasured time spent entertaining and fellowship shared with dear friends Vernetta Linton, Beulah Williamson and Bill Day.

Geraldine will be remembered for her strength, warmth, sharp intellect and unwavering love for her family and community. Her legacy lives in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Geraldine. Your life's work continues to light the path toward fairness and dignity for all.

Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Orlando Macer of Duck Key, Florida; sister, Valerie Stamper of Baltimore, Maryland and step-brother Ronald Gomez of Sandy Springs, Georgia; special nieces, Janine Creek and Megan Stamper of Baltimore, Magna special cousin, James Edward Alston who was as her full-time caregiver; special cousins, Alice Conquest of Parksley, Virginia, Regina Fosque of Newport News, Virginia, Elvary Hayes of Wattsville, Virginia, Kevin Conquest of Salisbury, Maryland, Kimmie Smith and his wife Linda of Baltimore, Maryland; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
