Obituary

Gertrude Mary Miller, was born to Annie J. Wright-Burden and William Burden on December 4, 1929 in Kent County , Maryland Eastern Shore. She departed this life on May 30, 2012. She was one of nineteen children. Gertrude received her education in the Eastern Shore Public School System. She attended University of Maryland Nursing School. Gertrude attended Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church as a child and received Christ as her personal savior. Her continued Christian training was from Allen AME Church, and eventually she joined Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church under the leadership and teaching of the late Rev. Dr. Theodore C. Jackson, Sr. She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir of Gillis. She also volunteered her time and service with Rev. Helen Samuels, Gillis Memorial C.C. Church at the former School No. 59, which is now Alcott Place. Gertrude was formerly employed as a private duty nurse's aide and soon worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a nurse. She worked as a cook at Sampson's Restaurant and several Chinese restaurants She understood and spoke Chinese! She managed Allen AME church Free Lunch Program. She volunteered for Park Heights Community Action Center and Stewart Hill Elementary School in the Special Education Classes. Gertrude was affectionately known as "Nanna" to her great-great-grandchildren, family and friends, "Lady bug" to her granddaughter Patricia and "Momma" to her grandchildren. Nanna loved to cook, bake and put her heart and soul into holiday and Sunday meals. She made the best apple sauce cake and potato salad. The Colonel or Popeye's could not touch her homemade biscuits and fried chicken! Nanna loved to listen to mainstream Jazz and gospel music. We would wake up to the smell of her bacon and eggs and her singing "rough Side of the Mountain". Nanna had a green thumb and named all her plants after her children and grandchildren. Momma was a loving, caring and supportive person. She offered words of wisdom to people and couples who needed an ear full good advice and her presence. She loved to smile, dance, laugh, and she TRULY spoke her mind with her fiery but but compassionate spirit! Nanna gave her last and never turned anybody away. Momma would shelter people who needed a place to stay. she would give her last dime to anyone who was in need. Nanna loved people unconditionally regardless of what people thought. As much as she cared for others, she was equally loved and cared for by those who took care of her during her illness. She wore many hats. Such as mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a great-great-grandmother, a wife, a childcare provider, a singer, a cook, a supporter, an encourager, in-addition to being wise, loving. funny, a teacher, a baker, and she was famous for wearing her red lipstick and push waves. Nanna took pride and joy in raising her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and neighborhood children and their children. She was considered the neighborhood Mama for Park Heights especially Pall Mall Road known as the Ranch. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Wright-Burden and William Burden, Sr., A special friend Fred Jackson affectionately known as poppa her children Beverly Ann Hill and Thomas Miller, siblings, William Burden, Jr., and Sylvester Burden and her great-grandson, Rodney E. Barnes, Jr. She leaves to cherish; The Father of her children and Best Friend, Albert James Miller, Sr., her sister, Helena Jackson, her children Albert James Miller, Jr., Lillian Bradley son-n-law Solomon, Ann P. Miller special friend James A. Gant and William G. Miller Sr., one niece Dorothy Hopkins, she also leave her friends Essie Mae Cummings, Martha Creat, Sister ella, Theresa Lance and Eloise Bracey, Sharon Boone, in-addition to nine grandchildren; Darryle Gunthrop wife Joyce, Jametta A. Hill, Rosalind Phillips - Duckett husband, Keith Duckett, Sr., Lawrence W. Scott, Sr., Destiney Jackson, Patricia A. Scott special friend Kenneth Anderson, Timothy R. Gray, Jr.wife tikia, William G. Miller , Jr. wife Shanay, Angela Gant-Hunter husband Nichols, Amecia Gunthrop, Darryle Barnes, Shana S. Scott, Brandon Gunthrop, Deona Hill, Alonzo Jackson, Lance W. Scott, Alfonzo K. Roy, Keith Duckett , Jr., Tinaya N. Gray, Nitaya I. Grasy Bruce Mckinney, Jr., Ryan Duckett, Shanaisa A. Scott Devin D. Arnett Sr., Anajahsia D. Handy, D'Nyah A. Lyde, & twenty great-great-grandchildren including Dalajha P. Scott known as Nana's sunshine and a hot of relatives and friends.
